In order to treat patients successfully, a practicing doctor must know three essential things: first, the nature of the patient's physical conditions, which refers to their body types; second, the nature of the disease under treatment, which refer to the differentiation regarding syndromes of diseases; third, the nature of therapeutic agents in use, which refer to the therapeutic effects of formulas, herbs, acupuncture points, and foods, etc. Historically speaking, before Yellow Emperor's Classics was published the documents listed over 50 symptoms and diseases without syndromes. In Yellow Emperor's Classics, over 300 symptoms and diseases are mentioned with some syndromes mentioned, such as cold syndrome, deficiency syndrome, and hot syndrome, etc. A famous doctor said, "Any doctor who fails to seek the truth of differentiating between syndromes, merely vainly hoping to attain wishful herbal remedies, is not a real doctor in the truest sense of the term." As the number of syndromes have continued to increase, close to 300 in total, syndromes differentiation become a serious and complicated issue in traditional Chinses medicine. On the one hand, a disease must be traced back to its syndrome before it can be properly treated. Therefore, in Chinese medicine, a doctor treats syndromes, not diseases as such. One the other hand, a given symptom or disease under treatment may reach over 10 or 20, or even more syndromes, how can traditional method of syndromes differentiation by reasoning and speculation achieve it. In April 1984 a national conference of traditional Chinese medicine was held in China. Again in May of the same year, another similar conference was held again, just two years before my college was established. At both national conferences, over seventy experts from twenty-seven organizations attended to discuss the important issue of differentiation with respect to syndromes.

Evidence-based Clinical Chinese Medicine: Vol. 1 Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease provides a 'whole evidence' analysis of the Chinese medicine management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Evidence from the classical Chinese medicine literature, contemporary clinical literature, and the outcomes of clinical trials and experimental studies are reviewed, analysed and synthesised. The data from all these sources are condensed to provide evidence-based statements which will inform clinical practice and guide future research. This book has been designed to be an easy reference at the point of care. During a patient consultation, Chinese medicine practitioners can refer to this book for guidance on which Chinese herbal medicine formulas, specific herbs, or acupuncture points, can best treat their patient, and be confident there is evidence which supports its use.Currently, Chinese medicine practitioners who develop a special interest in a particular health condition such as COPD have to consult a variety of sources to further their knowledge. Typically, they use the contemporary clinical literature to understand the theory, aetiology, pathogenesis and obtain expert opinions on the Chinese medicine management of COPD. They search the electronic literature to identify systematic reviews of clinical trials, if any exists, to obtain assessments of the current state of the clinical evidence for particular interventions. If they have the skills and resources, they may search the classical Chinese medicine literature for an historical perspective on treatments that have stood the test of time. This book provides all of this information for practitioners in one handy, easy to use reference. This allows practitioners to focus on their job of providing high quality healthcare, with the knowledge it is based on the best available evidence.

The Essentials of Chinese Medicine is a text book intended for international students who wish to gain a basic understanding of Chinese Medicine (CM) at the university level. The idea of writing such a text was originated from the Sino-American C- sortium for the Advancement of Chinese Medicine (SACACM), which was founded in February 2000. In 1995, the British Hong Kong Administration set up a Prepa- tory Committee for the Development of Chinese Medicine to look into ways of bringing Chinese medical practice and herbal trade under proper control and r- ulation. After the reuni?cation of Hong Kong with mainland China in 1997, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region continued the efforts to uplift the practice of CM to a fully professional level through legislation. To help bring up a new generation of professional CM practitioners, the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) obtained approval from the Government’s univ- sity funding authority to develop a School of Chinese Medicine to prepare students who will meet the future professional requirements through public examinations. In order to establish itself quickly as a rigorous provider of university level CM education, HKBU sought alliance with eight major CM universities in the Chinese Mainland, and one US university which was interested in developing CM education within its medical college. As a result, the Consortium known as SACACM was formed, with ten founding institutions from Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Shandong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Heilongjiang, Hong Kong, and the United States.

This book represents a new and hopeful paradigm for treatment of diseases that are spreading globally as countries adopt Western lifestyles and standards of living. It describes the phenomenal science and clinical efficacy of the work of Dr Xiu-Min Li across a broad array of immune and inflammatory diseases. These include food allergies, asthma, eczema, 'new' diseases such as mast cell disorders, obesity, and mental health problems that are part of a worldwide 'epidemic of progress'.The most allergic people are caught in a cycle of medication, steroid dependency, emergency hospitalization, and curtailing their activities and diets to avoid triggers. Children are 'losing their childhoods.' They are fighting a battle against diet, climate change, and environmental degradation. Dr Li offers them hope by healing the entire immune system, not just address symptoms. In her practice Dr Li treats complex combinations of allergic diseases for all ages, from infancy through adulthood, bringing relief to people who have suffered terribly from oozing, bleeding skin, desperate breathing disorders, and life-threatening food allergies. She uses her vast knowledge of biochemistry to improve on the traditional decoctions to create refined versions suitable for modern tastes and lifestyles. In contrast with Western pharmaceuticals, which are the study of 'one molecule's effects on one other molecule' Dr Li's work shows the effects of multiple molecules on multiple other molecules. Increasing numbers of scientists are beginning to see the possibilities for their own research, with the prospects for more collaborations with prestigious institutions around the world. allergyblogawardsuk.co.uk/5-managing-asthma-allergies-with-henry-erlich/

'It was August 1, a time when New York children are generally wearing shorts and short-sleeved shirts. My first patient was 18 months old and dressed more appropriately for late fall. When we took off his clothes I saw why. He was covered head-to-toe with oozing, staph-infected lesions, which he promptly began to scratch. That explained the overdressing — it was the only deterrent to scratching ... I had expected quick resolution using oral medication-teas — based on my experience in China. I wasn't prepared for this level of severity.'Dr Xiu-Min LiThus began Dr Li's journey into the treatment of eczema in the United States, which afflicts some 15-20% of children and 10% of adults. This book represents years of collaboration with patients, parents, pediatricians, allergists and dermatologists to treat disorders that resist standard intervention, and in some cases are caused by conventional treatment in the form of topical corticosteroids. Chronic use of steroids by patients desperate for relief from itching, oozing and scaling, and subsequent withdrawal can result in severe physical and psychological symptoms.'It wasn't just the extent of the disease. It was also the toll it took on family quality of life. Kids were crying. Mothers were crying. They were all sleeping badly. Most of these families also had bad food allergies, but food allergy is a silent disease. People worry about it, but with eczema they suffer every day.'Dr LiThis is a book of scholarship. Dr Li, explores the literature of traditional Chinese medicine, which has a long history of describing and treating skin disorders, to find therapies that might benefit current patients. It is a book of science as Dr Li and her team use state-of-the-art technology to explore the mechanisms of disease, the therapeutic effects of the herbs, and ways to make them more effective. But it is also a book of compassion as patients and their families recount their experience of illness and the road back, after working with Dr Li's private practice.Dr Li has dual professorships in Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology, and Otolaryngology at New York Medical College. Dr Li and her team have long devoted to themselves to developing novel therapies for food allergy, asthma, eczema, Eosinophilic Esophagitis, and Crohn's disease, among other inflammatory conditions.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a type of functional bowel disorder causing symptoms of abdominal pain and altered bowel habits such as diarrhoea (IBS-D) and constipation (IBS-C). This book uses the 'whole evidence' approach to give an overview of the available evidence for Chinese medicine treatment for irritable bowel syndrome, particularly subtypes IBS-D and IBS-C.The book starts by summarising the conventional understanding of irritable bowel syndrome, including its subtypes, aetiology, diagnosis and current available treatments. Data from Chinese medicine classical literature and clinical studies are then discussed. Evidence from clinical studies are evaluated using high-quality and rigorous scientific methodology. For IBS-D and IBS-C, evidence from treatment modalities including Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and combination Chinese medicine therapies are presented. The findings are analysed and potential implications for clinical practice and research are explored. Experimental studies that describe the potential mechanisms of action of key herbs are summarised. In the final chapter, current evidence of Chinese medicine for IBS-D and IBS-C are synthesised, recommendations for contemporary clinical practice and future research are also offered. The book is a helpful guide for clinicians and students of Chinese and integrative medicine, offering a comprehensive synthesis of both classical and contemporary knowledge that can integrated into their clinical practice for people with irritable bowel syndrome.

"The COVID-19 pandemic is now in its third year and has infected a large proportion of the worldwide population. After the acute infection, many stay in poor health for months. The nature of this aftermath is not yet fully understood, therefore the management of this syndrome through biomedical therapy is not ideal. Health services are struggling to help those who are still suffering. The condition has now been recognised as Post COVID-19 Syndrome (PCS), providing a common platform for academic exchange. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been applied to similar conditions for over 2000 years, including in the aftermath of previous pandemics, and the understanding of such conditions has been validated in clinical practice. Patterns have been established to group the weakness, the residue of pathogens or interaction between pathogens and the defence system. Those patterns form the framework for understanding the illness after acute infections. The authors use this ancient understanding in their own contemporary practice. Such practice is rewarding when the patterned illness within PCS is treated with acupuncture, Chinese herbs and other therapies together in a planned and coordinated way. This is the whole-system TCM approach strongly recommended by the authors as they demonstrate effective outcomes. The whole-system TCM approach for PCS is now presented to health professions for PCS"--
