Excerpt from Classroom Libraries for Public Schools The first purpose of this graded list is to furnish to teachers a convenient cata logue Of the books which the Public Library has to this date devoted to school use. We hope, by having such a list, to secure the aid of the teachers in the choice of each classroom library, so that the books may be suited to the age and capacity of the Children, and helpful both to teachers and pupils in connection with the course of study. The list is only tentative, and other books will be added from time to time, both from old books found to be needed and from new books published, as the wants of the schools require and the resources of the library will permit. The library will be very glad of suggestions from teachers, both as to changes in the list and the addi tion of new books. The selection of the books and the division into grades was first made on the basis of the reading from the Children's Department of the Public Library. The first selec tion and division was very carefully revised after trying the books in the classrooms of ten schools for a full year. The assignment of the books to the different grades has been changed and modified, particularly in the subjects of travel and history, to meet the requirements of the course of study. For instance, Cofiin's books on United States history have been continued into the ninth grade, although they are not above the comprehension of much younger readers, because American history is studied in this grade, and these books are found very useful and are much sought after. Librarians, superintendents of education and teachers in other cities, to whom the list may come, will find it Open to criticism, both as to books omitted, books included which perhaps should have been left out, and as to the assignment to grades. After a longer trial of the books by further use, and a larger experience by the com pilers, we will try to issue a better and fuller list with subject entries. The suggested list of reference books is also only tentative. It is added because it is a part of our plan to build up a good reference library in each school. The entire amount of the state appropriation awarded to those schools under the library care will be expended for this purpose each year, the Public Library furnishing all the books for the pupils' home reading. Excerpt from The Gary Public Schools: Measurement of Classroom Products In the last few years both laymen and professional educators have engaged in a lively controversy as to the merits and defects, advantages and disadvantages of what has come to be called the Gary idea or the Gary plan. The rapidly increasing literature bearing on the subject is, however, deficient in details and too often partisan in tone. The present study was undertaken by the General Education Board at the request of the Gary school authorities for the purpose of presenting an accurate and comprehensive account of the Gary schools in their significant aspects. In the several volumes in which the main features of the Gary schools are separately considered, the reader will observe that, after presenting facts, each of the authors discusses or in technical phrase attempts to evaluate the Gary plan from the angle of his particular interest Facts were gathered in a patient, painstaking, and objective fashion; and those who want facts, and facts only, will, it is believed, find them in the descriptive and statistical portions of the respective studies. Excerpt from Catalogue of Books for Public School Libraries in the City of New York: Graded and Annotated The following arrangement of hooks for elementary school libraries is an attempt to help the principal and teacher in careful and intelligent selection of children's reading for each grade. It is hoped that the annotations will go far toward fitting the right book to the right child, and bring into use or favor many volumes which seldom leave the shelves. The grading is necessarily tentative, but has been based on experience and should prove trustworthy for the average child, though it will hardly be suited to every section of the city. This matter must. Be regulated by the principal and teacher who are. On the ground and understand the conditions. Excerpt from Library Books for High Schools This list is based on the Minnesota school library list, Books for High Schools, 1913 - 14. The number of titles has been materially increased to include the suggestions of many high-school teachers, specialists in the Bureau of Education, high-school librarians, public librarians, and commission workers. The suggestions and demands of teachers of special departments for comprehensive lists on particular subjects have been somewhat insistent, and the result is that some divisions, notably agriculture, are out of proportion to the rest of the list. Excerpt from The Classroom Teacher, at Work in American Schools There is no reason to classify books as of higher or lower degree in a professional series. The teaching of beginning reading, the standards to be maintained in erecting school buildings and in their equipment, the organization of the supervisory and administrative staff, the control of public schools by a board of education that operates under a state law all are important in the equipment of a teacher charged with the education of a child in the first grade. If the school system is weak in any of these particulars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A First Book in English for High Schools One of the reasons for the publication of A first book IN english is the belief On the part of the authors and the publishers that a better text of this kind is needed one that is thoroughly adapted to use in the majority of American high schools. To write such a book has been the purpose of the authors, who have brought to the work years of classroom experience in the teaching of English composition to pupils of the junior and the senior high school ages. Principles. Throughout the first book IN english the authors have kept clearly in mind the fundamental problems of English com position: (i) The problem of something to speak or write about; (2) the problems of gathering, evaluating, and organizing material; (3) the problems of expressing thoughts correctly, clearly, sincerely, and pleasingly; and (4) the problem of adapting what is spoken or written to a definite audience or to a definite body of readers. An ex amination of the lessons in this book will Show that these fundamentals have been made basic considerations. Nowhere in the book is there a discussion of the principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis as such. At the same time, the habit of ex pressing unified thoughts coherently and with emphasis is fixed through practice. The pupil learns to present unified, coherent, well-emphasized thoughts by learning through practice to express thoughts that he has first carefully selected, organized, and evaluated. The young pupil should not be confused with abstractions. He must learn by doing. Throughout the book the developing interests and abilities of boys and girls are carefully gauged and considered. Excerpt from Before Books These school records, written by the classroom teachers from Copious daily notes, are organized according to a plan that has been adopted after much painstaking study and co-operative effort on the part Of the school staff. They are in themselves experimental. Their publication invites criticism and suggestions in matters of form as well as of content. Indeed, as Miss Pratt has stated, the purpose Of the school in publishing its records is to secure discussion Of them, and Of the school procedure pictured by them. TO those readers to whom the story of The City and Country School is as yet unknown, the following details will be of interest. Miss Pratt began her experiment in 1913 with a small group Of children Of pre - school age gathered from various homes. In the neighborhood. Dur ing the early years of its development the experiment was maintained through the generosity Of a few private donors. In the beginning tuition was entirely free, but parents who were interested and able to do so, from time to time con tributed to the school funds. Recently, at the request Of the parents, tuition fees were adopted, but at the same time it was agreed that a large percentage Of scholarship pupils Should at all times be enrolled. In this way the school's original purpose, to serve children who would normally be found in the city's public schools, has been preserved, at the same. Time that its growing reputation has attracted many parents whose children would otherwise have been sent to private schools. Excerpt from High School English Book One The chapter on Conversations about Books seeks to ih dicate a method for classroom discussions about the books prescribed for the work in literature. The authors believe that reading for pleasure is the chief aim of the literature work, and that the books should therefore be discussed from this point of view. They believe that the class dis eussions should be familiar conversations confined to topics of interest to young people. They would therefore leave the minute analysis of books for style and structure to the fourth high school year or to the college class. Such mi unties, if admitted at all, should be purely incidental. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
