It is 1595, and the rabbi’s son Jacob is frustrated with having to live in the walled ghetto known as Jewish Town. Why can’t he venture outside of the gates and explore the beautiful city? His father warns him that Passover is a dangerous time to be a Jew and that the people from outside accuse the Jews of dreadful deeds. But one night, Jacob follows his father and two companions as they unlock the ghetto gates and proceed to the river, where they mold a human shape from the mud of the riverbank. When the rabbi speaks strange words, the shape is infused with life and the Golem of Prague is born. In this breathtaking retelling of a timeless tale, Irene N. Watts’s beautiful words are complemented by the haunting black-and-white images of artist Kathryn E. Shoemaker. From the Hardcover edition.

Golem is a Clay-Man, a person physiologically altered to be able to administer psychiatric therapy to Artificial Intelligences. A day comes when he is as much seduced as bribed to infiltrate and expose the dirty secrets of the Munificent, that small elite cabal that answers to no one and owns everyone. But in order to find out what they are actually doing with all those volunteer pioneers they send off into the void of space in vast ships owned and operated by the insect-like traders known as Leggits, he must make devastating but altruistic sacrifices beyond the ability of any mere human. The question is, what is more destructive; the deception of the Munificent, or the knowledge of what their deception is?

Melkorka is a princess, the first daughter of a magnificent kingdom in medieval Ireland. But all of this is suddenly meaningless when she is kidnapped and taken aboard a Viking slave ship. Thrown into a new and unknown world, amongst people her former country's laws regarded as less than human, Melorka must learn quickly if she is to survive. Taking a vow of silence, however, she finds herself an object of fascination to her captors, and she soon realises that what little power she has may just make a difference. Based on an ancient Icelandic folktale, this is a heart-breaking story of a young girl who must learn to forget all she knows and carve out a place for herself in a new world - all without speaking a word.

Legends from Vamland is one of the most beautiful stories about human struggle against fear. The author blends Romanian legends and myths with those of cultures throughout the world. One can hardly find any noble and beautiful human aspiration in all the cultures of the world whose reflection is not to be found in Legends from Vamland. The author provides the image of the spiritual life of an imaginary people from an imaginary land. The result is a book of splendid originality. One of the first Romanian writers of science fiction, Vladimir Colin was also an important representative of Jewish culture in Romania. These tales have been abridged and retold for English readers by Luiza Carol, an award-winning writer, poet, and translator. The stories are enhanced by a series of beautiful original illustrations done by the renowned Romanian graphic artist Octavian Ion Penda.

Science and religious faith are two of the most important and influential forces in human life, yet there is widespread confusion about how, or indeed whether, they link together. This book describes this combination from the perspective of one who finds that they link together productively and creatively. The situation is not one of conflict or uneasy tension, or even a respectful dialogue. Rather, a lively and well-founded faith in God embraces and includes science, and scientific ways of thinking, in their proper role. Science is an activity right in the bloodstream of a reasonable faith. The book interprets theism broadly, and engages carefully with atheism, while coming from a Christian perspective. The aim is to show what science is, and what it is not, and at the same time give some pointers to what theism is or can be. Philosophy, evolution and the nature of science and human life are discussed in the first part of the book, questions of origins in the second. It is the very mind-set of scientific thinking that is widely supposed to be antagonistic to religious faith. But such suspicions are too sweeping. They misunderstand both faith and science. Faith can be creative and intellectually courageous; science is not the all-embracing story that it is sometimes made out to be. It is not that science fails to explain some things, but rather, it does not explain anything at all, on its own. It is part of a larger explanation. And even explanation has to take a humble place; it is not the purpose of life.
