The United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA) supported a study in rural communities in Ghana and assessed its potential for eco-business development. The findings revealed that, out of 150 rural households sampled, nearly half of the respondents lacked access to improved water supply. Similarly, a majority of the respondents (82%) did not apply any form of treatment to their drinking water. Interestingly, cultural reasons, cost and difficulty of treatment emerged as the main reasons that discouraged point-of-use water treatment. These findings call for education especially in rural communities, to promote the use of water treatment technologies like the bio-sand filter in rural households, particularly in developing continents.Education on household water treatment and storage interventions could be intensified in community health outreach programs, especially in communities that lack access to improved drinking water. This book focuses on the "how to" of water purification with detailed instructions and pictures on each of the five methods; boiling and aeration, chemical treatment, the three bucket method, the bio-sand filter and the SODIS (Solar Water Disinfection) method. It discusses the pros and cons of each method with an emphasis on methods which can be implemented without specialized training.Clean Water for Life also includes an extensive section on the commonly encountered germs and other pollutants with instructions on how to prevent and treat them.We also publish two other manuals on the subject of water purification, one for the health worker and the other focusing on community involvement and education. Water is a precious resource essential for all forms of life, and although there is plenty of water to meet the demand for the present population – and even for a projected population of 9 billion – there is significant spatial and temporal variation in its distribution. This results in water rich and water poor countries, water-related conflicts, and unsafe drinking water, a major killer identified by the World Health Organization (WHO). Water for Life: Drinking Water, Health, Food, Energy Nexus covers these issues, highlighting the multi-facted uses and importance of water in life: water resources, chemistry of water, drinking water, and the links between water and health, food, irrigation, soil, energy, transport, industry, recreation, disasters, and conflicts. The book is accessible and clear, with technical elements. It is ideal as a background supplementary text to support more specialist study across civil engineering, geography, and social sciences, and will guide readers to see the big picture of environmentally sustainable water management for all human and other biotic lives.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) explicitly state clean water and sanitation as the sixth of the 17 goals to be achieved by 2030. One of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) targets of halving by 2015 the proportion or percentage of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation has not yet been fulfilled. Clean water on the tap is still a luxury in Africa. Water exists in abundance in Africa but not in ways it can be accessed and used readily by ordinary people. Discovering solutions to the provision of access to clean and safe water in Africa remain still a big challenge. The SDGs have to be implemented fully and efficiently to make sure all people including rural households have access to clean and safe water and sanitation. Water is more critical than electricity and other necessities in life. One can find a way to live without electricity, but life without water is inconceivable. The priority to get water clean and accessible to
