Understanding Climate Change examines climate change as both a scientific and a public policy issue. Sarah L. Burch and Sara E. Harris explain the basics of the climate system, climate models and prediction, and human and biophysical impacts, as well as strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing adaptability, and enabling climate change governance. The authors examine the connections between climate change and other pressing issues, such as human health, poverty, and other environmental problems, and they explore the ways that sustainable responses to climate change can simultaneously address those issues.

Emphasizing peer-reviewed literature, this text details the impact of climate change on land and sea, the water cycle, human communities, the weather, and humanity’s collective future. Coverage of greenhouse gases, oceanic and atmospheric processes, Pleistocene and Holocene paleoclimate, sea levels, and other fundamental topics provide a deep understanding of key mechanisms, while discussion of extreme weather, economic impacts, and resource scarcity reveals how climate change is already impacting people’s lives—and will continue to do so at an increasing rate for the foreseeable future.

The Impact Of Global Warming On Texas written by Jurgen Schmandt and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-01 with Nature categories.

When The Impact of Global Warming on Texas was first published in 1995, it discussed climate change as a likely future phenomenon, predicted by scientific studies. This entirely rewritten second edition presents evidence that early climate change impacts can now be observed and identifies the threats climate change will pose to Texas through the year 2050. It also offers the hopeful message that corrective action, if taken now, can avert unmanageable consequences. The book begins with a discussion of climate science and modeling and the information that can be derived from these sources for Texas. The authors follow this with an analysis of actual climate trends in the various Texas climate regions, including a predicted rise in temperatures of 5.4 degrees F (plus or minus 1.8 F) by the end of the century. This could lead to less rainfall and higher evaporation, especially in regions that are already dry. Other important effects include possible changes in El Niño (climate variability) patterns and hurricane behaviors. Taking into account projected population growth, subsequent chapters explore likely trends with respect to water availability, coastal impacts, and biodiversity. The authors then look at the issues from a policy perspective, focusing on Texas's importance to the national economy as an energy producer, particularly of oil and gas. They recommend that Texas develop its own climate change policy to serve the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy independence, ensuring regional security, and improving management of water, air, land, and wildlife.

Climate Change Biology, Third Edition, addresses how climate change may affect life on the planet, particularly its impact on biology. Presented in three parts, it deals extensively with the physical evidence of climate change and modeling efforts to predict its future. Biological responses are then addressed, from individual physiology, to populations and ecosystems, adaptation and evolution. The final section examines the specific impact climate change may have on natural resources, particularly relating to human livelihood. This book will be a useful asset to the growing number of both undergraduate and graduate courses on climate change. All sections are updated using the more than 5,000 research papers that have appeared on the topic since the publication of the second edition. Sections on the combined effects of ocean acidification and climate change are especially strengthened, with over six new case studies and end of chapter questions in each chapter. - Covers the evolving discipline of human-induced climate change and the resulting shifts in the distributions of species and timing of biological events - Offers positive solutions and policy relevant insights on how extinctions can be avoided - Includes stunning full-color illustrations from original research
