The role of climate as a primary control on stratigraphy is the cornerstone of this volume. The emphasis on climate is in distinct contrast to most previous studies, in which stratigraphic variability has been related to changes in sea level and in tectonic activity. Furthermore, the findings, derived from several years of detailed study of modern and ancient key geologic sections around the world, indicate that traditional depositional models generally do not fully explain the origin of fossil fuels. Seismic facies correlated to the AND-2A core were mapped throughout McMurdo Sound. The strongest control on these facies was Miocene water depth. Facies patterns suggest that the shelf-slope-basin geometry within McMurdo Sound did not shift laterally throughout the Miocene, and was very similar to the present morphology. The mapped extent of erosion features indicates that grounded ice did not extend from the south throughout McMurdo Sound until ~14.4 Ma. Prior to that point, erosion was limited to the western shelf as ice extended eastward from TAM outlet glaciers. Up until the Middle Miocene, variable climate and ice sheet conditions dictated the basal thermal regime of ice sheets. To test the view that cold based ice sheets in arid, polar deserts minimally erode the landscape, sediment volumes and mass accumulation rates were calculated for critical climatic intervals. From ~22 Ma to ~13 Ma the overall trend of mass accumulation rates declined, with a noticeable decline following the onset of cold-based glaciation during a global cooling trend following the Mid Miocene Climate Optimum ~15 Ma.

Sequence stratigraphy has advanced considerably since the early applications of the concepts on seismic data. It attempts to discern the migration of facies re sulting from changes in a combination of factors such as, sea level, tectonics, climate and sediment flux, and integrates it with a meaningful chronostratigraphy. The stratigraphic record is envisioned as a framework of repetitive packages of genetically-related strata, formed in response to the shifting base level, in which the locus of deposition of various sediment types may be anticipated. This attribute is rapidly promoting sequence stratigraphy as an indispensable tool for prediction of facies in exploration and production geology. In hydrocarbon exploration the application of sequence stratigraphy has ranged from anticipating reservoir- and source-rock distribution to predicting carbonate diagenesis, porosity and permeability. The capability to anticipate vertical and lateral distribution of facies and reservoir sands in the basinal, shoreface, incised valley-fill and regressive settings alone has been a great asset for exploration. In frontier areas, where data are often limited to seismic lines, sequence-stratigraphic methodology has helped determine the timing and of types of unconformities and anticipate transgressive- and regressive-prone intervals. In production it is aiding in field development by providing improved source and seal predictions for secondary oil recovery. A recognition of stratigraphic causes of poor recovery through improved understanding of internal stratal architecture can lead to new well recompletions and enhanced exploitation in existing fields. The sequence-stratigraphic discipline is in a state of rapid expansion.

Stratigraphers and sedimentologists who are presently describing and interpreting the infill of sedimentary basins are generally agreed that it is difficult to disentangle the signatures of tectonic processes from those of climate and eustatic sea level change in the resultant rock succession.
