Excerpt from Climate of Illinois The state is entirely within the belt of prevailing westerly winds with their accompanying cyclones, or Tlows, and anticyclones, or highs. To these lows and highs, as they are commonly designated by the forecaster and on the weather map, is due the ordi nary weather of the state. As our weather changes are almost entirely due to the passage of cyclonic storms across the country, their impor tance requires some notice here. Excerpt from Flora Peoriana: The Vegetation in the Climate of Middle Illinois When we study the history of a country, we ought to be acquainted with its geography, its physiognomy of the landscape, its climate and the physical qualities of its people. All these things will influence the moral character of the people and only in that way, combining cause and effect, we will gain a clear view of its history. Likewise when we study the flora of a country, it is not sufficient to know the names and characteristic qualities of all the species that grow in a certain district; we ought to know the circumstances under which they grow, the topography, the climate, the nature of the soil aud the geographical distribution of each species beyond the limits of the country in question. This branch of science, known by the name of phytogeography, is a comparatively new one; it was founded in the first decennium of our century by Alexander Humboldt, when he published, in 1805, his "Essai sur la Geographie des Plantes," and in 1817, his "Prolegomena de Distributione Geographica Plantarum." Since that time many botanists, by treatises on single countries or on single groups of plants, have furnished material to more general works on the subject, f. i., Wahlenberg on the flora of Lapponia, 1812; on the vegetation and climate of Northern Switzerland, 1813; in his Flora Carpathorum, 1814. Robt. Brown, in his "General Remarks, Geographical and Systematical on the Botany of Terra Australis, 1814, etc. The first attempt to arrange the vegetation of our globe into separate geographical divisions was made by the Danish botanist Schouw, in 1822, when he published "Grundtrack til en almindelig Plantegeographie," followed in 1824 by an Atlas of twenty-two maps. He used the names of the characteristic orders for each of his divisions: For North America, three only; the most northern, from 50 N. L. northward, he called the Kingdom of Saxifrageae and Mosses; the Northern United States and Canada formed that of the Asters and Solidagines; the Southern States that of the Magnolias. The country between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Coast, the flora of which was at that time nearly unknown, he passed by. Meyen, the botanist of the Prussian expedition around the world in 1830-32, published in 1836 a general work on the Geography of Plants. The most important works on the subject are the "Geographic Botanique," by Alph. De Candolle (1855), and "Grisebach's Vegetation of the Earth," in 1872. Because of its capacity to change state, water can move from the atmosphere to land and back again. Excerpt from Temperature Prospecting for Shallow Glacial and Alluvial Aquifers in Illinois Walker, Bergstrom, and Walton (1965) reported water temperatures ranging between 53° and 57° F and C) and averaging 55° F C) in the Havana region of Illinois, in areas unaffected by river infiltration. The mean annual air temperature of this region is about 51° F C). A tabulation of the data presented by Hanson (1950, 1958, 1961) for munici pal water supplies in the east-central region of Illinois shows the water tempera tures from wells 50 to 400 feet deep to range from to F to C), averaging F C). The approximate mean annual air temperature at champaign-urbana is 52° F (11. 2° C). A linear regression line drawn through the data for east-central Illinois (fig. 1) suggests a gradient of F per 100 feet (2. 73 C per kilometer), although an argument could be made for a higher gradient by ignoring the points less than 100 feet and greater than 300 feet deep. Excerpt from The Sovereign State of Illinois, a Short History of a Great State: Its Geography, Climate, Resources, and Industries In Illinois the per capita wealth, even in the late thirties, was This amounted to per cent above the national average. Now the state ranks third in per capita income and its taxes per capita are probably the lowest of any major state. The 1949-1950 budget of over a billion dollars is a 12 per cent increase since World War II but the average increase in other states is 22 per cent. Industrially the state ranks third in the nation. Almost every town has its manufacturing plants. East St. Louis, Alton, Peoria, Rockford, Rock Island, Moline and others throb with industry. A million people are carried on factory pay rolls. Nearly two-thirds of the state is underlaid with coal. From great oil domes in central and southern Illinois, over seventy-five million barrels are pumped annually into the nation's mechanical circulation. Smokestacks tower above the fertile plain on almost every horizon. Yet, here and there, in bits of rough land along creeks, playgrounds have been set aside by the state. Artificial lakes attract yachtsmen. Fishermen and hunters find plenty of wild life to test their skill. Small game, partridge and other wild fowl are all bagged by sportsmen.
