Two decades have passed since publication of the first edition of Experimental and Clinical Neurotoxicology pioneered the development of this discipline. Since then no other book has approached the breadth, scholarship, and balance of that landmark volume. For this long-awaited second edition, the original editors have been joined by Albert Ludolf, who brings expertise in biological neurotoxicology, and together with their distinguished contributors they have completely rewritten and reorganized the text. The scientific and clinical foundation is laid in three comprehensive introductory chapters. An overview of the biological basis of neurotoxicity provides the goundwork for discussing the scope of human and veterinary neurotoxic disease. The bulk of the text is devoted to an alphabetical treatment of chemicals with neurotoxic potential. This consists of tightly written overviews of the properties, actions, and mechanisms of all manner of substances, whether natural or synthetic. The neurotoxic side effects of experimental agents and of therapeutic as well as abused drugs are covered extensively. Environmental pollutants, workplace contaminants, personal-use products, food additives, and agents harbored by plants, animals, and humans for use against their respective enemies are discussed. Each substance is rated on a three-point scale for the weight of evidence indicating a specific neurotoxic effect in humans, animals, or laboratory models. These effects are summarized and cross-referenced in a series of appendices and an extensive index. In summary, the second edition establishes neurotoxicology as a scientific discipline that melds neurobiology, toxicology, and neurology. From this unique vantage point, the book examines in encyclopedic manner several hundred chemicals with the capacity to induce neurological illness in humans and animals. Indispensable for the experimental neuroscientist and toxicologist, as well as for practitioners of human and animal medicine, the book also provides an authoritative, critical, and pithy reference work for specialists in public health and the legal profession.

Occupational Neurology a volume in the Handbook of Clinical Neurology Series, provides a comprehensive overview of the science, clinical diagnosis, and treatment for neurotoxin related neurological and psychiatric disorders. This timely collection provides not only a complete scientific reference on the chemical origin of this class of neurological and psychiatric disorders, but also a practical guide to diagnosis and treatment challenges and best practices. Handbook of Clinical Neurology Series The first volume of the Handbook of Clinical Neurology under the editorship of George Bruyn and Pierre Vinken was published in 1968. In 1982, the series was brought to an interim conclusion with the publication of the cumulative index volume (Volume 44). By that stage, the Handbook had come to represent one of the largest scientific works ever published. It enjoys a high reputation in specialist media circles throughout the world. After the series was concluded in 1982, it was realized that an update of the material was imperative. Accordingly, a revised series was planned and published over the following years, concluding with the publication of another cumulative index to both series (Volume 76-78) in 2002. Since then, George Bruyn has passed away and Pierre Vinken has retired, but the need for a further new series, incorporating advances in the field, again become necessary. Professors Michael J. Aminoff, François Boller and Dick F. Swaab have with enthusiasm taken on the responsibility of supervising the preparation of a third series, the first volumes of which were published in 2003. Now, more than 130 volumes after the first published, the Handbook of Clinical Neurology series continues to have an unparalleled reputation for providing the latest foundational research, diagnosis, and treatment protocols essential for both basic neuroscience research and clinical neurology. Provides comprehensive coverage of neurotoxins, especially in the workplace Details the latest science as the foundation for neurotoxicity diagnosis and treatment Presents coverage of the diagnosis and treatment essential for clinical neurologists and occupational medicine specialists

âMedical Neurotoxicologyã is the only up-to-date reference text aimed at the clinician covering both occupational and environmental causes of neurological disease. Although classic occupational poisonings by agents such as heavy metals are now rare in the West, environmental exposure to chemicals such as pesticides or electromagnetic radiation is almost universal - even mild contact can cause subtle psychological or neurological disturbances. One of the unique features of this book is that it provides details of how to examine the patient, how to conduct and interpret epidemiological surveys and how to interpret the signs and symptoms of poisoning - no other text can boast such detailed, step-by-step coverage. The book is aimed at the neurologist and the occupational physician, highlighting topics such as the choice of appropriate tests, differential diagnosis and therapy. However, it will also appeal to clinicians, pharmacists, environmentalists, toxicologists and pharmacologists. With recent cases such as Gulf War Syndrome, and general concern about the effects of chemicals, pesticides and electromagnetic radiation on health, the topic has never been higher in the public consciousness. The effects of exposure to chemical, physical and biological agents, whether at work or in the general environment, are explored in depth. Specific environmental dangers include heavy metals, aluminium, pesticides and solvents. There are also major sections on naturally occurring neuro-toxins, which include poisonous animals and plants, insect-borne diseases and microbiological toxins. Symptoms which the clinician should recognise and ways of assessing a patient are outlined to enable correct diagnosis and management of neurotoxic illnesses.

Neurotoxicology is a broad and burgeoning field of research. Its growth in recent years can be related, in part, to increased interest in and concern with the fact that a growing number of anthropogenic agents with neurotoxic potential, including pesticides, lead, mercury, and the polytypic bypro ducts of combustion and industrial production, continue to be spewed into and accumulate in the environment. In addition, there is great interest in natural products, including toxins, as sources of therapeutic agents. Indeed, it is well known that many natural toxins of broadly differing structure, produced or accumulated for predatory or defensive purposes, and toxic agents, accumulated incidentally by numerous species, function to perturb nervous tissue. Components of some of these toxins have been shown to be useful therapeutic agents and/or research reagents. Unfor tunately, the environmental accumulation of some neurotoxic ants of anthropogenic ori gin, especially pesticides and metals, has resulted in incidents of human poisoning, some of epidemic proportion, and high levels of morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, an increasing incidence of neurobehavioral disorders, some with baffling symptoms, is confronting clinicians. It is not clear whether this is merely the result of increased vigi lance and/or improved diagnostics or a consequence of improved health care. In any case, the role of exposure to environmental and occupational neurotoxic ants in the etiology of these phenomena, as well as neurodegenerative diseases, is coming under increasing scrutiny and investigation.
