Antimicrobial-associated diarrhea is often caused by Clostridium difficile; this disease can best be diagnosed by detection of fecal cytotoxin in a tissue culture assay and, when therapy is indicated, can be effectively treated with orally administered vancomycin. The cause of disease in most cases of antimicrobial-associated diarrhea that do not involve C. difficile is not known; fortunately, this form of diarrhea 1S usually mild. Antimicrobial-associated diarrhea may also rarely involve s. aureus and certain enteric pathogens. 37 QHAPTER 4 Qf. TECTlON. ISOLATION Al:iQ. . . IQENTlFICATlON OF CLOSTRIDIUM PIFFICILE S.P. Clostridium Difficile is a gram-positive anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium involved in antibiotic-associated diarrhea and colitis, which is developed after administration of antibiotics. C. difficile is nosocomially transmissible via hospital staff and contaminated environmental surface, as well between patients. C. difficile infection results in a broad spectrum of disease ranging from mild diarrhea to severe life-threatening condition. Colonic injury and inflammation are caused by the two types of toxins: toxin A and B produced by the bacteria. This book the occurrence of and treatment options for clostridium difficile among patients who develop this condition.

Jean-Claude Rambaud The place occupied today in basic and clinical research by intestinal disease related to Clostridium difficile is such that it is hard to remember that this range of disorders was completely identified only in 1977-1978, even though pieces of the puzzle had been identified much earlier. A brief historical review of the discovery of the enteropathogenicity of C. difficile in man might thus be useful. The bacterium was described in 1935 in the stools of infants, using the name Bacillus difficilis [7]. Until 1977, the microorganism, renamed C. difficile, considered to be of endogenous origin, was isolated only in rare cases of abscess or infection, most often unrelated to the digestive tract. Its role in genito-urinary infections [6] was not confirmed. However, the frequency of infant healthy carriers was recognized from the outset [7, 13]. Pseudo-membranous colitis (PMC) was described in 1883 following a gastroenterostomy. Many cases of this condition were published subsequently before the antibiotic era, describing various risk factors [4]. However the disease began to flourish only with the increasingly wide use of antibiotics. Antibiotic associated PMC was first described as an enterocolitis, though with little pathological evidence. It was principally related to the use of chloramphenicol and tetracyclines and attributed to proliferation of Staphylococcus au reus [ 11], a concept strengthened by the spectacular therapeutic action of vancomycin.

Clostridioides Difficile written by Henning Sommermeyer and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-27 with Medical categories.

The book provides a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge about Clostridioides (C.) difficile (formerly known as Clostridium difficile) and Clostridioides difficile infections (CDI). The diseases caused by C. difficile range from mild diarrhea to fulminant and in some cases fatal colitis. Historically, CDI was considered mainly as a hospital-acquired problem. Today, a significant portion of CDI is community acquired. Triggered by the introduction of new antibiotics, hypervirulent and multi-drug resistant strains of C. difficile (e.g., C. difficile ribotype R027) have emerged and spread across the globe. The volume covers the microbiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, risk factors for CDI, diagnosis, clinical pictures, treatment and prophylaxis. It includes an extensive reference list that allows an easy navigation through the original research publications. Clostridioides difficile helps the reader gain a better understanding of C. difficile, the challenges that may arise and the available treatment options. Given its broad coverage and features, it will appeal to a wide readership, from gastroenterologists through general physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers, to students.

Despite the tremendous progress made during the last few years in understanding the pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of Clostridium difficile-associated intestinal disease, many extremely important and fundamental questions remain to be answered. The objectives of this book are to summarize the available information regarding Clostridium difficile and its role in intestinal disease and to serve as a basis for future investigations in this challenging area.Clostridium difficile: its role in Intestinal Disease. An excellent volume that should appeal not only to the devotee of C difficile but to all gastroenterologists and microbiologists, this will not languish on my library shelves like so many other books I have reviewed. It will be regularly thumbed. --R.H. George, consultant microbiologist, Children's Hospital, BirminghamClostridium difficile: Its Role in Intestinal disease. The book is well written and informative; it has a vast amount of information packed in it...this book would be a welcome addition to the researchers and clinicians interested in C difficile-associated intestinal diseases. --Edward Balish, University of Wisconsin Medical School
