Winner of the PEN International/New Voices Award 2015 Shortlisted for the Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award 2015 Onstage again, you stare down at your feet, imagining you see the bright, painted curves of a pair of clown's shoes... It helps to pretend you are a clown, hidden inside baggy trousers, your true face invisible behind splashes of red lipstick and pale powder... A dazzling, ambitious debut collection from a young talent, these critically acclaimed stories dip into the shadows and spotlights of life. From the pale waking hours to the darkling places, Clown's Shoes introduces a cast of lost characters trying to find their way, and asking whether everyone really does come salting home in the end? Since the Devil visited the glove maker, she has found herself in the asylum counting out days instead of stitches. At the dog track, hidden amongst the rowdy punters, a woman bets on underdogs, life, and love. Onstage, a desperate mother performs a nightly striptease, whilst, in a small Welsh town, a young Korean immigrant tells her secrets to the sway of the sea. The people who populate the exciting and intriguing world of Clown's Shoes have stories that enthrall the imagination.

If asked at the many different points in my life to describe the definition of normal, no two answers wouldve been the same. My Drill Sergeant, when I was in the Army, said that it looked like I woke up in a new world everyday. Thats probably when I wouldve started referring to seek out the dictionarys answer at that time. By not having a handle on a reasonable definition to such a simple word is the best indicator of just how turbulent my life was, at that time. One of my earliest memories was the ending of Camelot with the assassination of President Kennedy. I was not aware of how this tragedy would impact the nation and the world, I couldnt even grasp the complexities of how my own life was unfolding around me the way it was. The 60s roller coaster left me starting the 70s in the house of mirrors, with no exit in sight. Ive always been aware that we all have problems that each of us have to deal with, but mine seemed to be strictly unique to me, or maybe it was the way I perceived them. Ive learned (much later in life) that we are all in this together.

Maybe Floppy Shoes Apocalypse editors Alex S. Johnson and John Ledger didn't invent clown horror, but as this new anthology demonstrates, they appear to have perfected it. Featuring a wide range of stories and poetry by such authors as Lisa Dabrowski, Dona Fox, Mary Genevieve Fortier and Stuart Keane, Floppy Shoes Apocalypse sheds new light on the dark side of the circus arts. A thoroughly entertaining read.--Jim Rose

Becky Kueker thought she had it all, publishing a new book, Hiding in My Pajamas, three years ago, and launching a national speaking career traveling the country at 75. What more could you ask coming off a two year low after she retired struggling with the emotional stereotypes that deal with retirement and aging. It was not until a complicated surgery requiring six months in a wheelchair and endless rehab, turned her life in a new direction she could never have expected. Fighting fear, depression and the realization that she would once again have to start over, Becky shares her journey facing a new beginning discovering that it’s laughter that changes everything. Meeting passionate people who inspired her, chapters are filled with poignant stories from women and men who have proven that aging does not have to define you and new beginnings are possible. Their stories are powerful and highlight the determination it takes to live your best life and what the passage of time means to how capable we are of embracing change. Not being financially prepared for retirement has become a national epidemic. Her chapter, Learning to Live After Retirement, features stories from those who were unaware that not planning was just speculating and rolling the dice on what might be. The shock that their savings will not be sufficient to retain the lifestyle they lived before offers a glimpse of a generation not prepared. Interviewing her husband and other men about retirement and aging highlights the unexpected marital turbulence that finds its way into very personal struggles that no one saw coming. “At last!A realistic and insightful book that reveals what really happens when you retire. Filled with humor and honesty this inspirational story is sometimes painful, often funny, always practical and thoroughly captivating.” —Rose Castillo Guilbault, author of Farmworker’s Daughter: Growing up Mexican in America and The Latina’s Guide to Success in the Workplace

THEY’RE COMING FOR YOU Coulrophobia--the fear of clowns--is very real and for good reason. You might think these red-nosed jokers are creepy, sure, but certainly not dangerous. You’d be wrong. Clowns never reveal their real names, and dress to obscure their identities. The rules of civilized society don't apply to them (what other stranger could offer candy to children and get away with it?), they have countless places to hide weapons on their person, and their appearance is downright unnatural. Clowns are the scariest people on earth, and the truth is, they are coming for your valuables, your children, and your sanity. In this comprehensive guide to self-protection from clown creepery, petty crime, and violence, Chuck Sambuchino--founder of the anti-clown group Red Nose Alert--delves into the terrifying clown underworld to provide the knowledge you need to know to protect yourself from these seemingly innocuous gagmen, using his proven four-step system: ASSESS, ANALYZE, DEFEND, PROTECT. Included within are instructions on how to defeat a clown in close combat, tips for spotting the plainclothes clown, and tutorials for fully clown-proofing your home against these painted and bewigged warriors. Most importantly, you’ll learn what to do when clowns attack… because it’s only a matter of time before they do.

It never fails to horrify, amuse, and often even disturb the reader.
