This paper evaluates the development of local and regional industrial development in the context of rail infrastructure projects taking place in Mozambique's Moatize coal fields linked to the discovery of coal deposits in the area. The study used a case approach to analyze the transport infrastructure developments associated with the exploitation of coal resources in Moatize. The study describes the transport infrastructure developments in terms of the main activities involved and the arrangements including the lead firms, the state actors, and the policy framework. The direct linkages to the local and regional economies are critically assessed including understanding how the investments have been organized. We assess the institutional dynamics in terms of the lead firms, the role of the Mozambique state, and influence of other organizations such as the World Bank. The study further assesses the relationship of the infrastructure investments with the development of capabilities at the local, national and regional level. The paper evaluates to what extent are local (Mozambique) and regional (South Africa) linkages being developed given competitive and procurement dynamics. The study provides recommendations on local and regional capabilities development drawing from the findings, including key elements of a regional strategy for maximizing the backward linkages of major infrastructure projects.

The Routledge Research Companion To Energy Geographies written by Stefan Bouzarovski and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-06 with Social Science categories.

Energy has become a central concern of many strands of geographical inquiry, from global climate change to the effects of energy decisions on our lives. However, many aspects of the ‘black box’ of relationships at the energy-society interface remain unopened, especially in terms of the spatial underpinnings of energy production and consumption within nations, cities and regions. Debates focusing on the location and nature of energy flows frequently fail to consider the multiple geographical networks that illustrate and explain the distribution of fuels and services around the world. Providing an integrated perspective on the complex interdependencies between energy and geography, The Routledge Research Companion to Energy Geographies offers a timely conceptual framework to study the multiple facets of energy geography, including security, space and place, planning, environmental science, economics and political science. Illustrating how a geographic approach towards energy can aid decision-making pathways in the domains of social justice and environment, this book provides insights that will help move the international community toward greater cooperation, stability, and sustainability.

Value Chains In Sub Saharan Africa written by Sören Scholvin and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-09 with Business & Economics categories.

Development largely depends on how given places participate in global economic processes. The contributions to this book address various features of the integration of sub-Saharan Africa into the world economy via value chains, so as to explain corresponding challenges and opportunities. The book deals with five issues that have not been covered adequately in scientific debates: first, policies are essential to promote value chains and increase their impact on development; second, value chains are diverse, and the variance between them has major economic and political implications; third, regional value chains appear to constitute a viable alternative to global ones (or, at least, are complementary to them), promising better developmental outcomes for the Global South; fourth, political and socio-economic factors are important considerations for a complete assessment of value chains; fifth, cities and city regions are also crucial objects of study in seeking to achieve a comprehensive assessment of value chains.

Fairness And Justice In Natural Resource Politics written by Melanie Pichler and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-05 with Political Science categories.

As demand for natural resources increases due to the rise in world population and living standards, conflicts over their access and control are becoming more prevalent. This book critically assesses different approaches to and conceptualizations of resource fairness and justice and applies them to the analysis of resource conflicts. Approaches addressed include cosmopolitan liberalism, political economy and political ecology. These are applied at various scales (local, national, international) and to initiatives and instruments in public and private resource governance, such as corporate social responsibility instruments, certification schemes, international law and commodity markets. In doing so, the contributions contrast existing approaches to fairness and justice and extend them by taking into account the interplay between political scales, regions, resources, and power structures in "glocalized" resource politics. Various case studies are included concerning agriculture, agrofuels, land grabbing, water resources, mining and biodiversity. The volume adds to the academic and policy debate by bringing together a variety of disciplines and perspectives in order to advance both a research and policy agenda that puts notions of resource fairness and justice center-stage.
