Urbanisation is increasingly recognised as a major ecological pressure at the coast. By 2035, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will have to spend £1 billion each year on flood defence and erosion control infrastructure if current levels of protection are to be sustained in England and Wales; this represents a substantial commitment to building new hard structures. Ecological research has shown that structures like seawalls, breakwaters, and harbour and port infrastructure are poor surrogates for undisturbed rocky shores. This, alongside substantial international policy drivers, has led to an interest in the ways in which structures might be enhanced for ecological gain. Virtually all of this research has been undertaken by ecologists, while the contribution of geomorphological understanding has not been fully recognised. This thesis presents an assessment of the two-way interactions between colonising organisms and the materials used to build hard coastal structures under a framework of biogeomorphology. The influence of material type and small-scale surface texture on early colonisation is assessed alongside detailed observations of the ways in which biota are involved in the alteration of substratum properties and behaviours through weathering and erosion in the intertidal zone. The research demonstrates that biotic (organisms) and abiotic (material substrata) components of coastal structures are inherently linked at various spatial and temporal scales through complex biogeomorphic interactions and feedbacks. Importantly, these interactions have consequences for the subsequent operation of ecological and geomorphological processes that are of relevance to urban marine ecology, weathering and rock coast geomorphology, and engineering. This thesis demonstrates the considerable potential to manipulate substratum-biota interactions on artificial structures for ecological gain, both directly and indirectly. More broadly, the explicitly interdisciplinary methodological approach adopted shows the value and necessity of integrated research for achieving useful, applied outcomes.

Current climate crisis is associated with rising sea level and increasing frequency and strength of storm surges. This raises the concern of losing coastal ecosystems such as dunes and salt marshes. This thesis helps to understand the biogeomorphic processes in these coastal ecosystems. The morphological plasticity of dune pioneer species in response to physical disturbance was shown experimentally. This plasticity enables species to survive in dynamic ecosystems with changing abiotic conditions. Further, A. arenaria was shown to be a key species in coastal dunes as it was the main driver for the resistance and resilience of experimental dunes. Lastly, in a study along the North Sea coast it was shown that functional traits can effect surface elevation change in salt marshes. Thus, this thesis demonstrates the importance of functionally described vegetation in coastal dunes and salt marshes.

The beach, the stretch of sand between high water line and the top of the foredune, is often inhabited by a unique community of plants on the California coast. This collection of work offers a suite of new information useful for managing beaches throughout the state. Data were collected at 17 beaches ranging from Redwood National Park in the north to Leo Carrillo State Park in the south. In chapter two, I developed a biogeomorphical model for ecological succession and foredune building for beach plants from the results of a cluster analysis of environmental variables and descriptions of successional roles from published literature. The cluster analysis produced five groups of plants that were consistent with published roles. The third chapter provides an assessment of species' responses to three management strategies of varying amounts of human foot-traffic (unrestricted access, fence exclosures, and no access) and quantifies the likelihood of occurrence with distance from a trail for several common beach speciesusing the Huisman, Olff, and Fresco models. Species on fenced beaches are similar to beaches with no access, but beaches with unrestricted access are different. Plant distribution on unrestricted beaches is controlled by both the amount of shelter at a location and the influence of foot-traffic and on the beaches with little access is controlled by the amount of shelter alone. Fenced beaches are intermediate between. The fourth chapter offers new tools for monitoring beach ecosystems using a remotely controlled hobby hot air balloon to take low altitude aerial imagery. The resulting photos were useful for visual identification of plants. The classification algorithms I used were not able to distinguish individual species, but were able to separate plants from sand. The fifth chapter is my research journal for the five years I spent collecting data. It describes the current conditions at 63 beaches along the California coast. The results of these studies highlights a need for creating areas of less intense human use on California's beaches, potentially utilizing the symbolic fencing method that many managers use to protect nesting bird habitat.
