Technically speaking, Maui is not a single island, but a collection of multiple islands which include Lana'i, Kaho'olawe, Moloka'i, and Penguin Bank (now underwater). There are no big cities in Maui; rather everyone lives in small towns, the biggest being Kahului, which hosts the island's main airport and commercial hub. The biggest draw to Maui, however, is the smaller town of Lahaina and the Lahaina Harbor where gentle waves provide the ideal location for beginners to learn the ancient sport of former Hawaiian kings: Surfing. Once the capital of the former Kingdom of Hawaii, Lahaina is still crammed with historic colonial architecture and plenty of art. No matter what you're heading to Hawaii to find, whether it's relaxation or adventure, I can assure you that Maui won't disappoint. Whether you're a nature freak, a surfing buff, a culture vulture in search of historical tidbits, or the more cosmopolitan type who's into shopping or sophisticated nightlife, Maui definitely has plenty to offer!

It has an area of 6,459 square miles. Maui is situated on the eastern end of the chain and is the second largest in the chain of Hawaiian Island which consists of 8 major islands and 124 islets. Maui caters to any type of tourist whether rich or budget conscious. It is often called the playground, to all sorts of tourists. Those who go to Maui are looking for wide adventures and an escape from the large crowds like the one in Oahu. The island of Maui is graced with abundant pristine beaches where tourists could either go swimming or hit the surf for a remarkable windsurfing experience. The scorching sun is also at its most intense because the volcanoes in the island block the precipitation from getting to the shielded side of the island. Whereas the west coast of Maui is barren, its east coast is a paradise of green valleys, ethereal forests, and captivating waterfalls. The island is not only perfect for beach bums, but also for the nature lovers. Maui is a perfect getaway place for a Hawaiian vacation. There is not any place in the world where you could experience almost everything on a small island such as Maui. More so, there is nothing to worry about traveling in Maui because attractions are accessible through vehicles as the roads skirt the edges of the island's coastline.

West Maui Coastal Uses Participatory Mapping Project written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Coastal mapping categories.

"This map book contains cartographic products derived from the West Maui Human Coastal Use Mapping project conducted at the Kaunoa Senior Center in Lahaina, Maui from Thursday, August 10th to Saturday, August 13th, 2011. Data was obtained through a participatory GIS workshop designed to gather spatial data on human uses of the coastal and nearshore marine environment adjacent to the Honolua to Wahikuli watersheds, in western Maui. The project was intended to fill a critical information gap regarding the spatial distribution and intensity of human activities in the Hawaii Coral Reef Strategy priority site in order to better inform coastal and marine planning and management activities. This effort was undertaken as a partnership between multiple NOAA line offices, including the Pacific Islands Regional Office (PIRO), the Pacific Services Center (PSC), the Office of Coastal Resource Management (OCRM), the Coastal Services Center (CSC) and the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC), working together with the Hawai'i Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR). Primary funding for the project is from NOAA's Coral Reef Conservation Program, with in-kind support from Hawaii State Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), NOAA partner offices, and the Kaunoa Senior Center. Mapping results were processed by NOAA's Pacific Services Center (PSC). A total of 47 workshop participants, as well as facilitators from NOAA and DAR, were involved during the three workshop days. Participants were selected based on their familiarity with a wide rage of locations across West Maui and their expertise in the various human uses and activities occurring in this region. They represented a wide range of overlapping backgrounds relating to marine resources: resource stewards, fishermen, tourism industry experts, watermen/women, natural resource managers, educators, cultural practitioners, scientists, residents, and local business owners"--Introduction.
