It is said that there are two categories of diplomat: those who belong to the Land Rover circuit and those who prefer the cocktail party round. Jane and her ambassador husband, Gilbert, definitely preferred the former and fully enjoyed some of the world’s wildest and most stunningly beautiful regions. There was no escaping the social side completely however and they would sometimes find themselves hosting a lunch party for 24 at the embassy one day and floating down an Amazonian river on a balsa raft the next. Life was exhausting but endlessly fascinating. This book represents the good times when one could roam freely through the high Andes and jungles of Bolivia or the vast expanses of the Sahara with the purpose of visiting as many provincial governors and Berber chiefs as possible and thereby giving rise to much good will and understanding. The penultimate section reflects retirement and the struggle to settle into a more traditional and domestic life at home, as well as the various small enterprises which the family thought up to make life more varied. The final chapter tells the story of Jane’s stay with Canadian nuns in the favelas of Salvador Bahia and the hopelessness of trying to improve the lot of the desperately poor who seemed never to lose faith. It also led to the realisation that what people wanted most of all throughout the world was the ability and the means to help themselves.

Cocktails, Crises and Cockroaches is a spirited account of an unconventional career in the Foreign Office from the closing months of World War II until towards the end of the Cold War. The realities and flavours of diplomatic life – with all its frustrations, risks and comedy – are interwoven with the local colour of different overseas assignments and of the Foreign Office itself. James Reeve's diplomatic trail is set during a turbulent period. He served in a number of postings, while the international politics of the post-war world were being formed: in Iran during the Musaddiq era, when Britain severed diplomatic relations; in New York at the time of the first meeting of the UN General Assembly; in Washington during the Suez crisis; in Southeast Asia while it appeared threatened by an apparently expansionist China; in West Germany during its 'economic miracle'; and in Libya as Gadaffi launched his revolution. Against this varied background and the overarching security and intelligence problems of the Cold War, Reeve describes a series of more personal episodes and experiences. Travelling with a tribal leader in Iran, a midnight SOS from a blackmailed Latin American female diplomat, hill tribes and opium smuggling in the Golden Triangle - these and many other episodes drawn from a dozen foreign assignments add spice to Reeve's memoirs.

This deep dive into the wonderful world of insects teaches us to love the tiny, seemingly terrifying creatures all around us. For many people, cockroaches are the most pesky of pests. Not so for entomologist Frank Nischk. In this funny and fascinating book, Frank reveals his love and admiration for so-called “nasty” creatures like cockroaches, crickets, and more. He shows us that even seemingly terrifying insects are beautiful in their own way—and essential to all life on Earth. Frank never planned to study cockroaches. But when researching hummingbirds fell through, he switched to cockroach feces—and soon fell in love. Cockroaches are incredible survivors, devoted parents, and adapt to almost any environment. Nischk even answers the age-old question of whether a cockroach would survive a nuclear explosion. After reading such eye-opening and warm-hearted stories, you’ll think twice before stepping on one! From cockroaches to crickets, Nischk travels to Ecuador to record cricket sounds, where he finds jungles bursting with a riot of insect life (including bullet ants whose stings are surprisingly painful). As Nischk narrates his (mis)adventures as an entomologist, he shares stories about intriguing insect discoveries, from damselflies who lay eggs deep underwater, to zombie fungi that invade the brains of ants. Brimming with fascinating facts, incredible stories, and unbelievable anecdotes, Of Cockroaches and Crickets will intrigue anyone who has ever loved—or hated!—bugs.

Handsome Amir, somewhere in his twenties, somewhere in a Yorkshire town, is torn between duty and lust. While his tradition-bound family urges him to choose a wife from a parade of blank and bashful beauties, he remains a slave to boozy blonde goddess Jackie, his fellow-worker at the department store in town. Pushing forty, with bubblegum hair and a filthy laugh, Jackie is an unlikely muse. She is openly entertained by Amir's teetotalism and moral sincerity, but behind her whip-smart wit is a forgiving and optimistic heart. And, he sighs, she has a smile that lingers in the air like smoke. Meanwhile, at home, Amir must dodge his family's plans for him to join the family newsagency business, 'Fags n Fings', and tenderly care for his beloved, but increasingly demented, mother. Sensitive, sassy, exasperated, twelve-year-old Elle lurks in a black hoody and crops her hair to look as unlike her flamboyant mother as possible. She avoids the spiteful girls at her Catholic school, and leads a double life: raucous ballads of the seventies with wine-soaked Jackie; organic raisins and stately homes with perfect Claire, her father's faultless new wife. In a northern town rife with racial tension and tabloid outrage, Spilt Milk, Black Coffee is an hilarious, beguiling and unlikely love story. A romantic comedy of twenty-first century multi-cultural Britain, this is an irresistible novel from the prizewinning author of My Summer of Love.
