Der damit verbundene Imageschaden für multinationale Unternehmen ist bei Veröffentlichung von solchen Skandalen enorm. Dies führt zu einem Druck des Marktes zur Einhaltung von sozialen und ökologischen Standards. Die Bundesregierung setzt zwar auf Freiwilligkeit, was die Umsetzung solcher Standards betrifft, allerdings bezeichnet sie die Unternehmen in der Agenda 21 als Schlüsselfiguren für die soziale Entwicklung des Landes. Der von der EU vorgelegte Aktionsplan (2011-2014), welcher von der Bundesregierung noch nicht umgesetzt wurde, verpflichtet die Unternehmen zur Einhaltung von sozialen und ökologischen Standards. Diese Arbeit verfolgt das Ziel, darzustellen wie eine Selbstverpflichtung von Unternehmen, die in einem Code of Conduct festgehalten wird, als Instrument zur Gewährleistung einer nachhaltigen Supply Chain führt. Im ersten Schritt werden die grundlegenden Begriffe „Code of Conduct“ (Kapitel 2.1.) und „Supply Chain“ (Kapitel 2.2.) definiert. Nachfolgend werden ausgewählte Richtlinien und Organisationen erläutert, die als Grundgerüst für eine nachhaltig ausgerichtete Unternehmungsführung dienen. In Kapitel 4 wird die Notwendigkeit der Ausrichtung eines Code of Conduct entlang der gesamten Supply Chain (Ultimate Supply Chain) dargestellt. Hierbei wird auch darauf eingegangen, wie ein solches Regelwerk entwickelt und nach erfolgreicher Implementierung, kontrolliert wird. Abschließend wird der Code of Conduct im Rahmen einer nachhaltigen Supply Chain kritisch gewürdigt und ein Ausblick über die Zukunft gegeben.

This book – the first of a two-volume series – argues that, today, stakeholder thinking has evolved into the study of interactive, mutually engaged and responsive relationships that establish the very context of doing modern business, and create the groundwork for transparency and accountability. This book makes it clear that in today's societies successful companies are those that recognize that they have responsibilities to a range of stakeholders that go beyond mere compliance with the law or meeting the fiduciary responsibility inherent in maximizing returns to shareholders. The process of engagement creates a dynamic context of interaction, mutual respect, dialogue and change – not a one-sided "management" of stakeholders. Indeed, the authors believe the very term "stakeholder management" to be outdated and corporate-centric. Companies can manage their relationships with stakeholders, but frequently cannot actually manage the stakeholders themselves, because, as the activist and collaborative initiatives described in this volume suggest, company-stakeholder relationships are not one-way streets and different institutions bring different agendas, goals and priorities to the engagement.
