Ben presto que' non più Leti e Gentili aspirarono al dominio d'italia, della quale ilongobardi avean posto la chiave in balia de' Franchi cedendo costoro le Valli di Susa e d'aosta e però i principali passaggi dell'alpi fino alle Chiuse nella Marca di To rino. Carlomagno non venne di lungi, quando e' venne alle Chiuse nel 774; ma ioonfini del vasto suo regno distendeansi di qua da' Monti nella nostra Penisola. Il regno Longobardo avrebbe dovuto restituirsi da lui a Roma l'antica Signora delle genti e soprattutto del I' Occidentale Imperio al che lo stringeva la sua nuova qualità di Patrizio de' Romani, affatto diversa da quella conceduta in altro tempo a Clodoveo. Dallo studio della diver sità de' due Patriziati e dall' investigar la natura delle promesse fatte da Pipino in Francia indi rinnovate da Carlomagno sul Corpo di San Pietro in Roma pende tutto il concetto della Storia d' Italia nell' ottavo secolo: sulle quali ricerche un' insolita luce si sparse dal Hammanio Fantuzzi... che qui da me si ristampa. Nè tarderà guarì a compirsi l'intero lavoro del Codice Diplomatico Longobardo. Ben tosto adunque potrò ricondurmi alle nar razioni della Storia insino a Liutprando, e giun gere a liberarmi d'ogni mio debito: poichè ai tempi di quel Be termina l'inchiesta sulle qua lità civili e politiche de' vinti, non che sugli effetti della conquista d'alboino e de' Duchi. Una Storia novella di si fatte qualità comincia con Liutprando; Storia, che in mirabil modo il lustra i fatti occorsi fino alla Legge Liutprandea sugli Scribi. Per mezzo di questa i Longobardi entrarono a parte del concetto Latino e si volsero al pubblico ma del Dritto Romano in tutto ciò che desso non Opponeasi all'editto di Rotari e che procedea dalle particolari loro convenzioni stabilite con qualunque scrittura innanzi a' Notari. Così a mano a mano la loro agreste vita della Germania mutossi prima in Pannonia, quando e' si convertirono all'aria n nesimo per opera de'goti; ma poscia, ed assai più in Italia quando la Cattolica verità ba lenò alle lor menti ed il Romano Dritto, in sinuatosi ne'lor desideri si fece ad informare i loro costumi.
