In the current study, humor comprehension was analyzed along the course of cognitive development within a Piagetian framework among a sample of school aged children. This work is an extension and elaboration of the work pioneered by McGhee (1971; 1974; 1976) in which a specific type of humor, namely, puns, is examined within the context of a corresponding cognitive process. Understanding puns requires cognitive structures that enable a person to process two meanings at once. The primary goal of this research was to determine when this cognitive development begins and how it improves within early childhood. The secondary goal was to test the cognitive congruency principle in pun humor. According to this principle, children should find pun humor to be funny only if it provides a cognitive challenge during processing. In this study, age of acquisition (AoA) ratings were used as an indicator of cognitive challenge. School-aged children were interviewed to have their reading fluency assessed using the DIBELs ORF test. Subsequently, children were asked to read several passages containing puns and non-puns. They were tasked with differentiating passages that contain puns from passages that do not. The children were then asked to rate the humorousness of these puns through a simple sorting task. Increases in age and reading fluency led to higher pun comprehension while increase in AoA led to decreases in pun comprehension. Results indicate that pun comprehension begins in first and second grade and continues through fifth grade. Additionally, a decline in humor appreciation in the fifth grade shows evidence of the cognitive congruency principle
