A troubled past resurfaces when an investigative journalist agrees to help find a missing child. The Australian bush is unforgiving, and there is not much hope when a four-year-old boy, Clem, apparently disappears into it without a trace. When the police begin to suspect the boy's step-father, his lawyer hires Damon, a specialist private investigator, to help defend him. No stranger to missing person cases, Damon agrees to let his partner, Lucy, interview the family. There she finds a strong connection to the boy's mother, and determines to find Clem no matter the cost. Having lost her own parents young, and nearly lost her brother, she hopes it will help her to exorcise her own demons. Refusing to believe that Clem is dead, Lucy begins a search that will take her into the seedier side of a rural community with many secrets. In so doing, she will stumble across criminal activity that will put her in serious danger. But it will also stretch her fledgling relationship to Damon, the only person she has ever really trusted. Can she find Clem? Can she find an inner peace? Can she let Damon in? If you enjoy suspense thrillers you are in for a treat with COLD VALLEY NIGHTMARE. It is a standalone, but you can also read about Lucy's backstory in the bestseller SMALL TOWN NIGHTMARE, which is FREE with Kindle Unlimited and available in paperback. Anna Willett is the author of several crime thrillers set around Perth in the south west of Australia. The rugged, uncompromising landscape is a graphic backdrop for stories that explore tested relationships, cruelty and revenge, and human resolve.

“Flights of Sky Cruiser” With the invention of sonar, Nazi subs were being sunk and ships were making it to London faster. The parts for Sky Cruiser arrived two weeks early. They would put them on that night and I would leave the next day. I was looking forward to going home and I could not wait to be back in Sky Cruiser. The fighters were fast and fun to fly but there was nothing like flying Sky Cruiser, I surely had missed it. “Death Ridge” With the rising of the sun, came the awful sight. Thousands of men, dead or dying, so many they couldn’t see the blood covered grass underneath them, anywhere on the entire field. “Third Michigan, fall in!” The Sargent yelled. The men didn’t hustle around trying to get to their places that time. They had spent the last four hours remembering what the Captain said, and listening to the screams, and moans and the pleas for help. Now to see the sight that lay in front of them, was more then some of them could handle. Several men dropped their guns and ran off, soldiers on horses chased them down. “Dirty Money” “Open the trunk Annie,” he looked at her with a worried look on his face. She opened the glove box and pushed the button. He got out and walked around to the back of the car. He was there for several moments, then he closed the trunk and walked back around to the drivers’ side door and got in. He looked at Annie. “He opened it.” “No it’s to soon, we will never make it all the way. What are we going to do?” Daniel looked at her and smiled. “We’ll just have to start at the next town, and hit every major city we come to, until we run out of time.” Annie looked at him and smiled. “The Devil’s Seven” I wasn’t paying much attention to him when he walked up. “Is there anyone sitting here,” he asked, I still hadn’t looked at him. “No there’s no one sitting there.” I said as I turned and looked at him for the first time. He was an old man that looked like he was in his eighties, rugged and mean looking, and no one you would want to mess with. I watched him as he sat down; this man had lived a rugged life. He had more scars on his face, than most people had on their knees. But what caught my attention the most; was the wicked smile on his face, and the evil look in his eyes. This man could kill you in a heartbeat and never think twice about it; I was sure of that. I had always been able to sense danger and evil, and this man was totally evil. He sniffed the air, then turned and looked at me. “Do I know you,” he asked, then he sniffed the air again.

When World War II erupted in Europe, Konrad Charmatz was a prospering businessman in Sosnowiec, Poland, a loving son, and an aspiring poet. For the next seven years he witnessed the Holocaust as it destroyed his family, his country, and his culture. In this astonishing story of suffering and survival, he gives his own personal account of the Warsaw ghetto, the death chambers at Auschwitz, the transport trains, the slave labor camps of Dachau, and the liberation. And from the perspective of the renowned journalist he later became, he also describes how the Holocaust was carried out, not only at the level of governments and their armies, but at the level of the individuals who took its orders. Few people survived the Holocaust from such close range or for so long, and few remembered it with the eye of a practiced journalist.

Winner of the 2012 Colby Award and the first Afghanistan memoir ever to be written by a Marine Harrier pilot, A Nightmare’s Prayer portrays the realities of war in the twenty-first century, taking a unique and powerful perspective on combat in Afghanistan as told by a former enlisted man turned officer. Lt. Col. Michael “Zak” Franzak was an AV-8B Marine Corps Harrier pilot who served as executive officer of VMA-513, “The Flying Nightmares,” while deployed in Afghanistan from 2002 to 2003. The squadron was the first to base Harriers in Bagram in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. But what should have been a standard six-month deployment soon turned to a yearlong ordeal as the Iraq conflict intensified. And in what appeared to be a forgotten war half a world away from home, Franzak and his colleagues struggled to stay motivated and do their job providing air cover to soldiers patrolling the inhospitable terrain. I wasn’t in a foxhole. I was above it. I was safe and comfortable in my sheltered cocoon 20,000 feet over the Hindu Kush. But I prayed. I prayed when I heard the muted cries of men who at last understood their fate. Franzak’s personal narrative captures the day-by-day details of his deployment, from family good-byes on departure day to the squadron’s return home. He explains the role the Harrier played over the Afghanistan battlefields and chronicles the life of an attack pilot—from the challenges of nighttime, weather, and the austere mountain environment to the frustrations of working under higher command whose micromanagement often exacerbated difficulties. In vivid and poignant passages, he delivers the full impact of enemy ambushes, the violence of combat, and the heartbreaking aftermath. And as the Iraq War unfolded, Franzak became embroiled in another battle: one within himself. Plagued with doubts and wrestling with his ego and his belief in God, he discovered in himself a man he loathed. But the hardest test of his lifetime and career was still to come—one that would change him forever. A stunning true account of service and sacrifice that takes the reader from the harrowing dangers of the cockpit to the secret, interior spiritual struggle facing a man trained for combat, A Nightmare’s Prayer brings to life a Marine’s public and personal trials set against “the fine talcum brown soot of Afghanistan that permeated everything—even one’s soul.”

Forest Dreams Forest Nightmares written by Nancy Langston and has been published by University of Washington Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11-23 with History categories.

Across the inland West, forests that once seemed like paradise have turned into an ecological nightmare. Fires, insect epidemics, and disease now threaten millions of acres of once-bountiful forests. Yet no one can agree what went wrong. Was it too much management—or not enough—that forced the forests of the inland West to the verge of collapse? Is the solution more logging, or no logging at all? In this gripping work of scientific and historical detection, Nancy Langston unravels the disturbing history of what went wrong with the western forests, despite the best intentions of those involved. Focusing on the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington, she explores how the complex landscapes that so impressed settlers in the nineteenth century became an ecological disaster in the late twentieth. Federal foresters, intent on using their scientific training to stop exploitation and waste, suppressed light fires in the ponderosa pinelands. Hoping to save the forests, they could not foresee that their policies would instead destroy what they loved. When light fires were kept out, a series of ecological changes began. Firs grew thickly in forests once dominated by ponderosa pines, and when droughts hit, those firs succumbed to insects, diseases, and eventually catastrophic fires. Nancy Langston combines remarkable skills as both scientist and writer of history to tell this story. Her ability to understand and bring to life the complex biological processes of the forest is matched by her grasp of the human forces at work—from Indians, white settlers, missionaries, fur trappers, cattle ranchers, sheep herders, and railroad builders to timber industry and federal forestry managers. The book will be of interest to a wide audience of environmentalists, historians, ecologists, foresters, ranchers, and loggers—and all people who want to understand the changing lands of the West.
