From an early age, growing up during the Vietnam era in the Washington, D.C., metro area, the author was affected by the terrorism of the day. Friends, associates, and neighbors were impacted in one way or another. One neighbor was taken hostage in Beirut, Lebanon, years prior to the Iran hostage crisis and 9/11/01. In this volume, Patrick J. Pacalo puts to work the skills he learned as a student of political science and history; as a Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) intern; and as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Army Reserve during Desert Storm. According to CIA analysis in 1981: "without indirect Soviet assistance many terrorist groups would find their operations severely hampered." There existed Soviet-directed terrorism and quasi-independent terrorist groups. This book represents information and analysis. The reader is free to reflect and decide if the winding down of some groups, while the Soviet state disintegrated, was coincidental.

Cold Warfare: a Compact History achieved a five star rating by Wings of Gold, the prestigious U.S. Naval Aviation magazine. The reviewer, author/editor Captain R. M. Rausa, called it "an excellent perspective." This is a unique book about the Cold War. It shows the US used covert action in the war for independence. The Soviets used covert action and terror. In 1901, Lenin said he would do this once in power and did so after the revolution of 1917. President Woodrow Wilson then sent a world-wide telegram on the Soviet genocide to US diplomats. Ideology and covert action are the essence of Cold Warfare and it is covered in this book from before 1917 thru to 1991. Late Cold War history including NSC staffer Lt. Col. Oliver North and the Iran-Contra scandal are covered. The book shows how Osama Bin Laden gained indirect support from the US in the battle for Afghanistan in the 80s. Sources include declassified CIA and OSS papers, presidential papers, the US National Archives, and the private National Security Archive. An interview with Daniel Ellsberg was also used. The author served in the reserve 464th Chemical Brigade from 1990 to 1992 as an intelligence officer. In 1983, he interned in the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) of the US Army War College.
