Adi�s, Cordera! es un relato que pertenece a la colecci�n El Se�or y lo dem�s, son cuentos, de Leopoldo Alas, �Clar�n� (1852-1901). La colecci�n apareci� publicada en Madrid en 1893 por Manuel Fern�ndez y Lasanta Editor y engloba la novela corta El Se�or y una serie de cuentos que la siguen: �Adi�s, Cordera!, Cambio de luz, El centauro, Rivales, Protesto, Un viejo verde, Cuento futuro, Un jornalero, Benedictino, La Ronca y La rosa de oro. �Adi�s, Cordera! destaca por ser, de entre todos ellos, el m�s l�rico y emotivo.En el prado Somonte, en Asturias, en el camino de Oviedo a Gij�n, dos hermanos gemelos llamados Pin�n y Rosa han cuidado y establecido un intenso v�nculo a lo largo de los a�os con la Cordera, una vaca que su madre ya muerta les dej� para que les sirviera de sustento econ�mico en su ausencia. Su estilo de vida tranquila se ve afectada por la llegada del tren y ante las numerosas deudas que tiene, Anton de Chinta, el padre, debe vender el animal y enviarlo al matadero. M�s tarde tambi�n Pin�n es alejado de su familia para irse, junto con otros reclutas, a la guerra carlista.�Adi�s, Cordera! aparece en la d�cada de los 90, cuando se desarrolla la semilla espiritual que se hab�a concebido a finales de los 80 con el Krausismo. Se trata de un momento en el que, por la fuerte tradici�n religiosa y cristiana y por la d�bil minor�a laica existente, el equilibrio krausista entre positivismo-naturalismo y espiritualismo cede finalmente a favor del segundo. As�, el terreno espiritual y religioso sustituye el positivismo como �mbito de inter�s para la sociedad y se pierde la confianza en que la materia pueda dar raz�n y explicaci�n a las cosas. En el �mbito literario, el escritor renuncia a vincular la psicolog�a y la actitud de sus personajes a factores gen�ticos o materiales, y el prop�sito observacional del naturalismo y su esp�ritu m�s cr�tico y sat�rico se sustituyen ahora por una contenida ternura, delicadez y sensibilidad. Sin embargo, y aunque el planteamiento literario cambie, los supuestos ideol�gicos subyacentes siguen siendo los mismos: la denuncia al mundo urbano como una sociedad hip�crita, mezquina, carente de valores morales y espirituales. Contrapuesta a ella, existe una defensa y apolog�a del mundo rural y campestre y de su apacible, buc�lico y sencillo modo de vida.

The Rebel is the memoir of a revolutionary woman, Leonor Villegas de Magnon (1876-1955), who was a fiery critic of dictator Porfirio Diaz and a conspirator and participant in the Mexican Revolution. Villegas de Magnon rebelled against the ideals of her aristocratic class and against the traditional role of women in her society. In 1910 Villegas moved from Mexico to Laredo, Texas, where she continued supporting the revolution as a member of the Junta Revolucionaria (Revolutionary Council) and as a fiery editorialist in Laredo newspapers. In 1913, she founded La Cruz Blanca (The White Cross) to serve as a corps of nurses for the revolutionary forces active from the border region to Mexico City. Many women like Villegas de Magnon from both sides of the border risked their lives and left their families to support the revolution. Years later, however, when their participation had still been unacknowledged and was running the risk of being forgotten, Villegas de Magnon decided to write her personal account of this history. The Rebel covers the period from 1876 through 1920, documenting the heroic actions of the women. Written in the third person with a romantic fervor, the narrative interweaves autobiography with the story of La Cruz Blanca. Until now Villegas de Magnon's written contributions have remained virtually unrecognized - peripheral to both Mexico and the United States, fragmented by a border. Not only does her work attest to the vitality, strength and involvement of women in sociopolitical concerns, but it also stands as one of the very few written documents that consciously challenges stereotyped misconceptions of Mexican Americans held by both Mexicans and Anglo-Americans.
