Collecting And Managing Cost Data For Bridge Management Systems written by Paul D. Thompson and has been published by Transportation Research Board this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation (DOT) administrators and mid- to upper-level managers; researchers; cost estimators; bridge and general management system engineers; and bridge design, construction, inspection and maintenance engineers; as well as to private industry professionals involved in developing bridge management system (BMS) software and collecting and analyzing BMS cost data. The state of the practice for collecting and managing cost data for BMS is described based on data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of the state DOTs. This report describes BMS cost data for work done by contract and in-house forces for state and local governments. It includes project-level cost estimation as well as the collection and management of data for network- level cost models. The various cost estimate methods for replacement; maintenance, repair and rehabilitation; and emergency work are analyzed as are the special requirements of user costs and other special economic data.

Conversion Between Network Level And Project Level Units Of Measure For Use In A Bridge Management System written by Howard M. Turner and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Bridges categories.

VDOT is implementing Pontis 3.0 to provide the analytical component of its Bridge Management System (BMS). This system prioritizes bridge maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and replacement (MRR & R) needs using cost/benefit analysis. The accuracy of this analysis depends on the condition assessment of the structure and the cost data of MRR & R options used in the analysis. For the network-level analysis a BMS provides, the focus is on what work was done to an element rather than how it was done. To standardize the MRR & R actions taken at the network level, commonly recognized (CoRe) elements have been identified and are used in Pontis. For each element, a set of feasible MRR & R actions has been defined. How these actions are accomplished is tracked on the project level. Contracted bridge work is managed using industry-standard pay items and quantities. There is a great deal of historical project-level data from previous contracts. However, there has not been any large scale network-level data collection effort. The purpose of this project was to examine cost management practices in VDOT and to develop an architecture for an automated project-level to network-level cost conversion process. This process should provide accurate updated cost data to Pontis by (1) using pay codes, quantities, and other contract information; (2) combining this information with existing inventory information and new inspection information about the structure; (3) reporting what CoRe feasible action was taken and the associated unit cost; and (4) providing this information in a Pontis-usable format. The investigation of cost management revealed a number of areas where VDOT could improve its practices. The research addresses potential remedies for some and, in some cases presents potentially viable conversion schemes.

This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation bridge design and structural engineers, bridge consultants, and others involved in applied and research methods for increasing the live load capacity of existing highway bridges. The synthesis describes the current state of the practice for the various methods used to increase the live load capacity of existing highway bridges. This is done predominantly for bridges in the short- to medium-span range. Information on the more common bridge material types is presented. There is an emphasis on superstructure rather than substructure strengthening.

This study gathers information on current practices that senior managers at transportation agencies use to make network-level decisions on resource allocations for their bridge programs. In particular, the study explores how agency bridge management systems are employed in this process. Information was gathered through a review of literature on U.S. and international bridge management, a survey of U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies, and 15 in-depth interviews with state DOT executive and bridge managers.
