Collier Schorr met Paul Hameline, a young French artist and model, in New York in 2015. A friend of friend, he came to her home for a "go-see", which is when a photographer gets to see how a model looks in front of the camera. Paul's family lives in the Marais section of Paris around the corner from the hotel Collier stays at while in Paris, so they began to meet and to make a project that lasted two years in which Collier would visit Paul at his parents' house and take pictures and talk. The idea was for Paul and Collier to experience photography as a social space, a conversation in which his body and her eyes could try and understand each other's fascinations and fantasies. Many of the pictures were published in 'Re Edition' magazine. 'Paul's Book' expands that magazine story to form a larger piece about the way in which a photographer and model can search for some greater revelations with the simplest movements and various states of undress. --

Appropriating Desire written by Katherine A. Pill and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Art, Modern categories.

In her artist's book Jens F. photographer Collier Schorr uses Andrew Wyeth's exhibition and, more specifically, exhibition catalogue entitled The Helga Pictures (1986) as material for a series that allows for an act of appropriation and recreation that takes place across gender, time and medium. Schorr's use of the book format is complex, as issues of gender, sexuality, identification and desire are intimately displayed in serial form. Her work is often discussed in terms of gender performativity, and a complicating - not just deconstruction - of gender and desired other. There is a subtlety to the sexualities she represents that make her photographs unique, but there is also a high degree of fantasy to her work that is not always apparent on the surface, as Schorr studies in great detail the male body she is curious about and will never inhabit, and histories that she will never know personally. In Jens F., the fantastical element is made more explicit, as Schorr inserts herself aggressively into each page, mimicking the desire and power of Andrew Wyeth and introducing a complex form of subjectivity to the act of appropriation. Schorr's use of appropriation stands in stark contrast to its functions of the 1980s, as she allows for a new, positive, reading of Wyeth's work and its position within art history. That is, Schorr does not use appropriation as a means of critiquing the male artist; she instead creates a framework that allows for a close examination and largely positive rereading of Wyeth's work, while also complicating the role of desire in artistic practice. Various aspects of cultural hierarchies are brought to the forefront in Jens F. as Schorr has laboriously copied each of the more than 240 drawings and paintings that were shunned from a number of museums in the 1980s. The Helga Pictures created media frenzy, including a cover story in Time Magazine in 1987. The book was a popular success, and became the first art exhibition catalogue to be selected for the Book-of-the-Month Club in July 1987. Jens F., on the other hand, was produced in limited edition of 1000, each signed by the artist. The third chapter of this thesis provides an overview of appropriation theory from the 1980s, giving context to its current definitions and functions, and to its relationship to Schorr's work.

There I Was written by Collier Schorr and has been published by Steidl this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Automobiles in art categories.

There I Was marks a shift in medium and a conceptual departure for Collier Schorr. She is best known for her photographic studies of a real and imagined town in southern Germany, works which tease the accepted artifice of photography to forge an appropriated remembrance of German histories. Schorr found drawing a more acute medium to describe events that took place in the neighbourhoods of her childhood, specifically the muscle car counter culture of the 1960s in Long Island and Queens, NY. This history is related through the short but spectacular life of charismatic 19 year-old drag car racer Charlie Astoria Chas Synder and his 67 Ko-Motion Corvette. At the age of four Schorr accompanied her father, an automotive photographer and journalist, to a local race track where she watched Astoria Chas work on his car. A subsequent article followed, with the now eerie headline While Astoria Chas is doing his thing in Vietnam his friends are racing his L-88. By the time the article was published, Charlie Snyder had died in action in Vietnam. There I Was is Snyder's story and Schorrs dilemma. He was there, she was not. The project examines the role of the photograph as proof of the photographer's presence, territory and view, and the difficulty of representing any past without the theatricality of re-staging it. Based entirely on photography, the book engages with the medium and simultaneously challenges the role of the photograph as document of the past. Using a collision of source materials for the drawings, beginning with her fathers images and Snyders own snapshots taken in Vietnam, Schorr then draws from professional reportage pictures, so as to describe, literally sketch out, one monumental trip from Queens to Vietnam and back. These drawings are contrasted by reproductions of vintage car magazine articles and Schorrs own photograph portraits. There I Was is a complex and multi-faceted look at escape, culture, dreams and mortality, conjuring up an expressionistic portrait of the dichotomies of the late 1960s in a fractured wartime America.

Tiré du site Internet http://exilebooks.com: "Known for her stunning, emotionally charged images of androgynous youth and for her documentary-style portrayals of teen boys in Germany - Collier is one of the few fine art photographers that has seamlessly interpreted her vision into fashion magazine spreads and ad campaigns. The title 8 1/2 Women plays on a combination of Ozen's "8 Women", Fellini's "8 1/2", and Altman's "3 Women", and utilizes Collier's own fashion photography, outtakes, appropriations, drawings, notes and other reference materials. Printed in a xerox style undulating between black and white and color, this mezmerizing artist's book is filled with images of desire and induces a conversation about the female gaze into a debate about female representation."

Whose Keeper written by Alan Wolfe and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-25 with Philosophy categories.

Whose Keeper? is a profound and creative treatise on modernity and its challenge to social science. Alan Wolfe argues that modern liberal democracies, such as the United States and Scandinavia, have broken with traditional sources of mortality and instead have relied upon economic and political frameworks to define their obligations to one another. Wolfe calls for reinvigorating a sense of community and thus a sense of obligation to the larger society. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1989.

"Paul P. has become internationally known for his haunting paintings and drawings of the faces and figures of young men, all sourced from pre-AIDS gay magazines. Nonchaloir, the artist's first monograph, collects over 100 of his stunning portraits in a small, intimate volume. Paul P.'s subjects and their poses are imbued with references to famed painters James McNeil Whistler and John Singer Sargent. Even the title itself is referential: nonchaloir is a defunct French word suggesting repose and resignation, found in works by Mallarmé and Baudelaire. Introduction by Collier Schorr." -- from Art Metropole website (viewd 25 May 2018).

Day Sleeper written by Sam Contis and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Photography, Artistic categories.

In this book, Sam Contis presents a new window onto the work of the American photographer Dorothea Lange. Drawing from Lange's extensive archive, Contis constructs a fragmented, unfamiliar world centred around the figure of the day sleeper - at once a symbol of respite and oblivion. The book shows us one artist through the eyes of another, with Contis responding to resonances between her and Lange's ways of seeing. It reveals a largely unknown side of Lange, and includes previously unseen photographs of her family, portraiture from her studio, and pictures made in the streets of San Francisco and the East Bay. Day Sleeper will be featured alongside other works of Contis's in the exhibition Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures at the Museum of Modern Art, February-May 2020.
