The central premise of Collision Culture is that Ireland's experience of economic boom has resulted in the collision of incompatible ways of life. These cultural collisions in Irish life today occur between the local and global, between traditional and modern, between Catholic and secular, and between rural and urban. They have become apparent in a variety of changes - changes in patterns of rates of suicide, in patterns of consumption, in representations of Irish celebrities, in patterns of home ownership, in the rise of tribunals, and in a variety of other points of public discourse and Irish culture. The authors argue that the above categories clearly are not starkly divided, but rather are analytic reference points that are useful in trying to understand the conflicts behind various social problems in Ireland. By investigating cultures of everyday life - driving, housing, music, religion, consumerism, fashion, and sexuality, among others - the book shows how recent social transformations are manifest at the everyday level.

Cyril Orji is Associate Professor of theology at the University of Dayton, Ohio, USA. He specializes in systematic and fundamental theology with particular emphasis on the theology and philosophy of Bernard Lonergan, whom he brings into conversation with the works of the American pragmatist and semiotician Charles Sanders Peirce. Dr Orji also collaborates in inter-religious dialogue and the intersection of religion and culture – inculturation, post-colonial critical theory, and Black and African theologies – and engages in communal practices of communicative theology in the development of local/contextual theologies. Cultural Collision is an exhibition investigating the fusion of religions and multicultural elements with emphasis on the Hindu Indian culture. My work combines my own past identity fused together with my new found cultural and religious identity. The exhibition examines issues related to visual language specifically dealing with Hindu symbolism and the belief in the spiritual awakening, as well as the concept of the impermanence of life and reality of death. Through innovative materials and techniques, my work portrays the culture and art of India by incorporating the rich vibrant colors and ancient philosophical religious traditions. My many trips to India over the years have given me a new perspective, deeply impacting and creating a lasting infatuation found apparent in my work. I identify my work and myself with the fusion and dynamics of the all accepting new found faith of the Hindu religion.
