Attento agli sviluppi della storiografia internazionale sull’età delle scoperte e delle esplorazioni, Codignola rilegge alcuni testi fondamentali di tale periodo. Proprio perché unici, egli mostra come tali testi siano spesso letti in modo acritico, come si trattasse di un’“enciclopedia della conoscenza”. Con una prospettiva critica certamente inusuale, lo storico genovese rilegge il diario di bordo della prima navigazione di Cristoforo Colombo, il resoconto del viaggio americano di Giovanni da Verrazzano, il manoscritto della pretesa spedizione di Samuel de Champlain alle Antille, nonché la corrispondenza originale di Laurens van Heemskerk relativa ai suoi progetti di esplorazione artica, spaziando dalla fine del XV secolo agli inizi del XVIII secolo. Da una parte, Codignola ribadisce l’interesse di tali testi tanto per la storia dell'espansione europea quanto per i primi rapporti tra europei e popolazioni aborigene d’America. Dall’altra, l’autore mostra anche quali trabocchetti fattuali e quali pericoli interpretativi siano nascosti in pagine così apparentemente descrittive. Insieme al saggio storiografico che li precede, le riletture di Codignola rimettono in discussione molti luoghi comuni della storiografia “nazionalistica” sulle scoperte e le esplorazioni, soprattutto quelli della storiografia italiana.

La costruzione della monarchia pontificia durante l’età barocca, partendo dal Papato umanistico-rinascimentale di metà XV secolo e passando per la svolta cruciale segnata dalla Riforma e dalla Controriforma, fu un processo incessante che incominciò con l’elezione di Martino V Colonna (1417-1431) e si protrasse durante il pontificato di Papa Urbano VIII (1623-1644) sino al consolidamento dello Stato Pontificio in una vera e propria monarchia assoluta e, insieme, allo sbocciare dell’attuale splendore di Roma come residenza dei Papi. In tale percorso si possono evidenziare due tendenze principali. 1. Gli ambiti sacro e profano si mescolarono perfettamente in virtù del duplice ruolo del Papa, capo di uno Stato italico e supremo pastore della Chiesa universale (“un corpo e due anime”) benché, spesso, fossero incompatibili l’uno con l’altro. 2. La trasformazione del Papato in una monarchia assoluta, unita a una forte centralizzazione amministrativa dello Stato ecclesiastico, determinò altresì lo sviluppo della Curia Romana.
