Mexico and the Philippines have inherited predominant Catholic populations as a result of three centuries of Spanish colonial rule. Policies and attitudes on reproductive health care have largely been influenced by the lingering Catholic conservative presence in both countries. However, Mexico has had better success in tangibly separating church and state in matters of reproductive health care policy. How and why was Mexico so successful in liberalizing contraception and abortion laws, given its shared colonial and Catholic history with the Philippines? Using Roland Robertson's global field model, this thesis will examine the factors that have contributed to the countries' disparate policies on abortion and contraception. By assessing how deep the Catholic Church has penetrated the four dimensions of Robertson's model in each country, this thesis will conclude that elements of Mexico's road towards increased accessibility cannot be adapted in the Philippines despite the nation's commonalities with its Latin American counterpart.

As Americans rethought sex in the twentieth century, the Catholic Church's teachings on the divisive issue of contraception in marriage were in many ways central. In a fascinating history, Leslie Woodcock Tentler traces changing attitudes: from the late nineteenth century, when religious leaders of every variety were largely united in their opposition to contraception; to the 1920s, when distillations of Freud and the works of family planning reformers like Margaret Sanger began to reach a popular audience; to the Depression years, during which even conservative Protestant denominations quietly dropped prohibitions against marital birth control. Catholics and Contraception carefully examines the intimate dilemmas of pastoral counseling in matters of sexual conduct. Tentler makes it clear that uneasy negotiations were always necessary between clerical and lay authority. As the Catholic Church found itself isolated in its strictures against contraception—and the object of damaging rhetoric in the public debate over legal birth control—support of the Church's teachings on contraception became a mark of Catholic identity, for better and for worse. Tentler draws on evidence from pastoral literature, sermons, lay writings, private correspondence, and interviews with fifty-six priests ordained between 1938 and 1968, concluding, "the recent history of American Catholicism... can only be understood by taking birth control into account."

Kalbian contends that official Catholic Church teaching on contraception, articulated in the 1968 papal encyclical Humanae vitae, is rooted in appeals to three biblical commandments: though shall not kill, given that contraception interferes with potential life; thou shall not commit adultery, given that contraception enables lust and prevents procreation as the proper end of marriage; and thou shall not steal, given that contraception aims to restrain population and the potential economic development that everyone deserves. In short, Catholic teaching justifies its prohibition to contraception by invoking three social values: sex, violence, and justice. After offering a history of the Catholic Church and contraception and then analyzing these three values from a feminist perspective, Kalbian suggests that three recent phenomena challenge this three-pronged justification in profound ways: the use of condoms in the HIV/AIDS epidemic; the emergency contraception pill; and the urgent need for population control. Taking these issues seriously, Kalbian claims, might both challenge and help transform Catholic discourse on contraception.

This research was carried out with the main objective that sought to explore the influence of Catholic Church on Contraception in Kenya. 24 Christians and 30 priests respondents that represented 8 provinces of Kenya and 8 faculties of the said University were reached. 100% of the priests accepted that married couples can family plan, 50.5% of the Christian felt that the secular world had overtaken the church on matters of family planning, 80% of priests said that contraception can't contribute towards positive development among others. It is recommended that Church leaders should create enough time and friendly environment of addressing the challenges of managing the ever increasing population, Science and human rights be incorporated in Religion for the purpose of reaching a big number of family planning services' recipients.
