Excerpt from The Colorado Plateau Region: Considered as a Field for Geological Study In order to analyse sub-aerial erosion, we must consider it (a) as consisting of parts, and (b) as modified by condi tions. A. All indurated rocks and most earths are bound together by a force of cohesion, which must be overcome before they can be divided and removed. The natural processes by which the division and removal are accomplished make up erosion. They are called disintegration and transportation. Excerpt from Colorado Plateau Region Except for the Archean and Algonkian formations at the bottom of the Grand Canyon the Colorado Plateau province is essentially a region of sedimentary rocks - a pile of Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Tertiary strata, chiefly sandstone, more than 10 000 feet (3, 050 meters) thick and exposed over an area exceed ing square miles (388, 500 square kilometers). The sedimentary beds of the region are representatives of broadly defined stratigraphic groups that extend northward in Utah to the Uinta (you-in' tah) Mountains, eastward into Colorado and New Mexico, southward to central Arizona, and westward beyond the utah-nevada boundary line. Like the Permian (kaibab) limestone that now constitutes the surface rock on both sides of the Grand Canyon, beds of Triassic, Jurassic, and Tertiary age, similar to those exposed in the cliffs of the High Plateaus and in buttes and mesas in northern Arizona, are believed to have been once continuous across the Colorado, providing a cover twice as thick as the present canyon is deep. The stratigraphic section exposed reveals evidence of extended intervals of earth movements and erosion. In the walls of the Grand Canyon the Algonkian beds rest on the eroded surface of a mountain range and are unconformably overlain by the Cambrian; the Ordovician and Silurian are lacking, the Devonian is present in patches only, and ancient surfaces of erosion are represented by unconformities at the base of the Redwall (mississippian) and the base and top of the Supai (permian). In the rocks that form the plateaus north and south of the Colorado there are unconformities of regional significance be tween the Kaibab (permian) and the Moenkopi (mo-en ko 'pi) (triassic), between the Moenkopi and the Shinarump (shin air 'ump) (triassic), and between the Cretaceous and the Tertiary, besides breaks that indicate shorter lapses between other formations. Excerpt from Arizona The western portion of the United States is apart of the great region Of mountains and plateaus which extends from Mexico north ward into Canada. This great elevated region is known as the Cordilleras. Along its eastern border, in the United States, rise the rugged ranges Of the Rocky Mountain system. Near the western border of the Cordilleras is another nearly parallel system of mountains, consisting of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges, and still farther west, close to the Pacific Ocean, is a third mountain system known collectively as the Coast Ranges. Between the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra nevada-cascade system is a series of great plateaus. At the north is the Columbia plateau, drained by the Columbia River, which has cut its way through the Cascade range to the Ocean. Farther south is the Colorado Plateau, drained by the Colorado River, which flows in a southwesterly direction into the Gulf of California. Between these two plateaus is the elevated region known as the Great Basin, because its scanty rainfall finds no drainage outlet. Its surface is broken by many parallel ranges of mountains extend ing north and south. South of the Colorado Plateau is a region of somewhat lower elevation, similar to the Basin region, except in that its drainage finds an outlet through the tributaries of the Colorado River. Arizona includes part of the Colorado Plateau and part of the Open basin region to the south. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Up to the great stretches of the Plateau Country where the sky is unending, the light unfailing, and the clean air still blows over an unbroken wilderness! Up from the gasolene and dust of the city, the screech of motor and engine, the bustle and roar of human endeavor, the shuffle of feet, the chatter of life! Up to the glow of the Painted Desert, the shadow of the Tusayan Forest, the color of the Grand Canyon - the Open spaces where Nature still rules supreme and man is merely a fretful midge quite unable to disturb her majestic repose. Excerpt from Peneplains of the Front Range and Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado Later Davis3 accepted Ball's description and applied to the high lands the term a two-cycle mountain mass. This term and other expressions in his paper indicate that Davis believes that only two main cycles of erosion are represented in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado - an older one resulting in the formation of a peneplain and a younger one during which the canyons and cirques were excavated. Hence the remnants of the highland plain found at many places in these mountains are referred to as parts of the peneplain. A possible third cycle. The dissected plateau near Pikes Peak which Cross described as practically the same as the floor of South Park was recognized by Richardson 4 in the Castle Rock quadrangle and by Finlay 5 in the Colorado Springs quadrangle. This plateau lies at altitudes between and feet and is extensively developed in the Front Range in Colorado. From localities at some distance from the mountains this plain appears to be an almost horizontal shelf that extends along the mountain front as far as the eye can reach. The area in which it is best developed and best preserved extends from Denver south ward to Pikes Peak. In areas farther north, such as the moun tains west of Golden, it is not so readily recognized, but it seems to be represented by surfaces much lower than the highland plain described by Ball as lying above feet. Remnants of the lower plain may be recognized from some commanding eminence, such as Mount Lookout, near Golden, Colo., whose summit appears to be a part of the lower peneplain. This plain has become known somewhat widely as the Rocky Mountain peneplain, possibly because it is the most extensive land form in the Front Range. From Mount Lookout may be seen at nearly the same level numerous flat tops, benches, and smooth-floored reentrants (see B]. I), which are rem nants of the Rocky Mountain peneplain. But the best-known view of this peneplain is that which may be had from the side of Pikes Peak at an altitude of about feet. From this point the oh server looks to the north and west over the tops of the mountain ridges as over a level plain. Excerpt from Free Homestead Lands of Colorado Described: A Handbook for Settlers The value of farm lands in Colorado is far below what it should be. This is easily accounted for from the fact that the available farm lands exceed the supply of farmers in the State five to one. People are waking up to this fact, too. They are finding out that ten acres in Colorado can be purchased for the price of one acre in Illinois, Iowa and the Eastern States. They are also finding that there is not so much difference between what can be produced on an acre of Colorado land and on an acre in the Mississippi valley. Excerpt from Mountaineering in the Rocky Mountain National Park This is a Nation of outdoor lovers; it has yet to become a Nation of mountain lovers. For many years the high, rolling plateau from which rises the majestic Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado has been the resort of increasing summer thousands, but few, indeed, ventured into the fastnesses of the mountains. When plateau and mountains both became the Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915, the popularity of the neighborhood increased with extraordinary rapidity; the normal attendance of in 1915 became in 1916 and in 1917. Attention became centered upon the snowy mountains which Congress dignified as typical of the Rockies' noblest heights, and the desire to enter them began to possess those who had been content to View them from the plains; thousands of new visitors were attracted by their sudden fame. Mountaineering of the kind which is enjoyable to the unac customed has become popular. Increasing thousands yearly are now tasting of a new joy and yet one which is as old as man. Fortunately there existed, to meet this new need, a few men and women to whom these mountains were old and familiar friends. Fortunately these men and women, proselyters of nature, were' inspired to bring all men and women into the fellowship of the wild. This book is a compilation of experiences of the Colorado Mountain Club which cover many years of climbing these very mountains. Its purpose is to offset in some measure the many years of inexperience of those who come new to the mountains. If it will lessen the hardship of new climbers until experience shows them that there is no hardship, but in its stead vigorous nerves, bounding health, inspiration, and a rare communion with nature, its object and the hope of the club's members will be fulfilled. Excerpt from The Forest Pioneer: Region Three; October 1935 A series of thinning plots was established in a dense seedling stand in Decker Wash on the Sitgreaves in 1926. The spacings were 1 to 2 feet; 2 to 5 feet; 5 to 4 feet; 10 feet, and a control plot in which there were usually several_ seedlings per square foot. A recent examination by Pearson and Ranger Howard Smith shows that the greatest height growth, but rela tively low. Diameter growth, has been.made on the unthinned or lightly thinned plots.. On these plots the seedlings are new mostly between 5 and 7 feet tall, and there is sufficient variation to indicate the t dominants are in the process of development. On the 5 to 4 and 10-foot plots the trees are of very poor form, and the crowns have poor foliage because Of severe tip moth damage. The tip moth has been far less active in the denser stands, a relation which has been observed to be quite general on the Colorado Plateau.
