Excerpt from Columbus Medical Journal, 1904, Vol. 28: A Magazine of Medicine and Surgery Having read and heard so much about the Finsen Light treatment in the cure Of disease, I decided in April of this year, to make a personal investigation to see and learn for myself if it was true that such diseases as lupus and rodent ulcer could be cured by light. I visited several institutions where the Finsen Lamp was in operation. In Manchester, England, in the Salford skin hospital, they had a Finsen Light department under the supervision of Prof. Brooke, who informed me they were unable to treat half the sufferers who applied for treatment, and they had solicited, by public subscription, for the erection Of a new hospital for skin diseases, where they would be able to enlarge the light department so at least 200 people could be treated daily, as there were people on their waiting list whom they would be unable to treat, with their present facilities, for an indefinite time. Excerpt from The Therapeutic Gazette, 1904, Vol. 28: A Monthly Journal of General, Special, and Physiological Therapeutics In the remittent (estivo-autumnal) forms of malarial fever there is usually constipation, and unless the symptoms are grave I begin the treatment with small doses of calomel, y, to 1 grain to every hour until bowels have acted thoroughly. In some cases I follow this with a saline. I then begin the quinine in from 3 to 5 grains to every three or four hours, continuing it without regard to the height of the fever until the temperature is normal, when the intervals between doses are increased to six hours, after which the quinine is continued in tonic or prophylactic doses until there is no probability of a recurrence of the infec tion. In the comatose, congestive, or other malignant types of malaria, it is some times advisable to administer the quinine hypodermically. For this purpose I em ploy a sterilized solution of the bisulphate or the hydrochlorate, though it is rare in my practice that I see the malignant types of malaria.
