The Policy Debate In the past decade, colleges and universities have made greater efforts to involve students in community service, particularly service-learning, a special form of community service designed to promote student learning and development. Proponents of service-learning believe that it stimulates academic performance, increases students' understanding of the responsibilities of living in a democratic society, and encourages students to become involved in the social problems facing their communities. Hundreds of college and university presidents, most of the major higher education associations, and a number of highly influential scholars actively support the development of service-learning programs on college campuses. At the same time, service-learning has its critics, particularly among faculty, many of whom are skeptical of its benefits. Critics contend that service waters down the curriculum, further weakening the quality of higher education, and that the time students spend volunteering in community agencies as part of a course might be better spent in the library or laboratory.

More and more, students, instructors, and institutions are seeing how service learning--a means of combining community service with academic education--enhances the studies, careers, and overall lives of students as they work toward becoming civic-minded citizens and leaders. Service-Learning Companion provides guidance to students who have enrolled in a program with a service-learning component, or a special individual course that focuses on service learning. Its versatile structure allows instructors to implement it as a companion to a main text or to use it as a stand-alone text. Concise and affordable, this text provides clear definitions of service learning terminology, a theoretical foundation, a step-by-step process of implementation and assessment, and specific examples. Hands-on exercises that allow students to respond to real-life situations and practice their responses in the classroom prepare them to perform effectively in communities.

Service-learning is a form of experiential education that combines academic study with community service. Learning occurs as students work with others through applying their academic knowledge to community needs and at the same time, reflecting on their experience and the real-world relevance of their skills. Service-learning in Asia: Curricular Models and Practices describes the development of service-learning in Asia around three themes: service-learning and indigenous traditions; service-learning and social justice education; and service-learning and multicultural education. The essays in this collection are multi-disciplinary, ranging from the field of social work to business. The discussions are also comprehensive, covering every dimension of service-learning from curricular designs to learning outcome assessment.
