Nella Grecia antica lo Stato è paragonato a una nave che deve compiere una traversata per giungere felicemente in porto. È qui che nasce la nozione di governo e con essa le domande politiche fondamentali: come deve essere governata una città per evitare i conflitti interni, approdare alla concordia e salvaguardare la pace? Come garantire l'alternanza al potere? Affidare il governo della città ai filosofi è la condizione per eliminarne i mali? Che cosa significano amicizia e concordia tra i cittadini? Platone e Aristotele vissero in un mondo di città più o meno autonome, circondato da grandi monarchie, e avevano sotto gli occhi in primo luogo Atene, la polis che allora rappresentava la forma più complessa e articolata di democrazia. Il carattere diretto della forma ateniese di democrazia era assicurato non soltanto dalla partecipazione alle decisioni comuni attraverso il voto nelle assemblee aperte a tutti i cittadini a pieno titolo, ma anche da una articolata istituzione nella rotazione delle cariche, potenzialmente accessibile a tutti i cittadini attraverso elezione o sorteggio. Giuseppe Cambiano, uno dei massimi studiosi del pensiero antico, restituisce la riflessione di Platone e Aristotele sul buon governo illuminando il loro e il nostro presente.

Ecco, così il destino, intrecciando trama ed ordito, aveva tessuto per lei il canavaccio della sua esistenza. Parole misteriose, di una frase lasciata a metà che, pronunciate da una misteriosa comare, daranno il benvenuto a Serena su questa terra, imprigionandola in un secolo, una famiglia, una vita che non le appartiene. In un sud che affonda nella miseria e rassegnazione, muove i primi passi Serena, inciampando nella consapevolezza che nulla, né cognome, né casato le appartengano. Il suo destino, infatti, il bandolo lo ha preso da molto lontano per portarlo in quel piccolo borgo né troppo alto da essere in montagna, né troppo in basso da essere in collina, che vive all’ombra di un maestoso castello a forma di nave, per intrecciarlo al filo del destino di Giulio. How did the ancient Greeks and Romans envision the end of the world? What is the long-term future of the human race? Will the world always remain as it is or will it undergo a catastrophic change? What role do the gods, human morality, and the forces of nature play in bringing about the end of the world? In Apocalypse and Golden Age, Christopher Star reveals the answers that Greek and Roman authors gave to these questions. The first large-scale investigation of the various scenarios for the end of the world in classical texts, this book demonstrates that key thinkers often viewed their world as shaped by catastrophe. Star focuses on how this theme was explored over the centuries in the works of poets, such as Hesiod, Vergil, Ovid, and Lucan, and by philosophers, including the Presocratics, Plato, Epicurus, Lucretius, Cicero, and Seneca. With possibilities ranging from periodic terrestrial catastrophes to the total dissolution of the world, these scenarios address the ultimate limits that define human life and institutions, and place humanity in the long perspective of cosmic and natural history. These texts also explore various options for the rebirth of society after world catastrophe, such as a return of the Golden Age or the redevelopment of culture and political institutions. Greek and Roman visions of the end, Star argues, are not calls to renounce this world and prepare for a future kingdom. Rather, they are set within larger investigations that examine and seek to improve personal and political life in the present.
