La Chiesa, dopo essere stata corrosa da tutti i mali, dopo aver conosciuto l’ignominia fino nei papi, è ancora in piedi; essa è la più vastta e la più solida delle istituzioni d’Occidente e cammina a grandi passi verso la conquista dell’Oriente: è il vero miracolo del Cristo”.

«Ho scritto il diario sul Camino per tutto il tempo in cui sono rimasto solo. Da Puente la Reina in avanti ho preso appunti. Tornato a casa, nel settembre ’92, ho cominciato il lavoro di redazione. È stato semplice e difficile allo stesso tempo. Difficile perché la fedeltà della memoria esige, se non serenità d’animo, almeno equilibrio interiore mentre stai scrivendo (nei ritagli di tempo, dopo il lavoro). Semplice perché è stato come ritornare sul Camino. La stesura originale, nella sua mole, riporta traccia di questo: sistemando gli appunti ho ripercorso il Camino; era come se dovessi dare conto di ogni passo, ogni sentiero, ogni luce nell’aria, ogni persona incontrata, ogni pensiero pensato. Nel marzo ’94 ho chiesto a un amico di leggerlo. Alla fine mi ha detto: “Hai fatto fare il Camino anche a me, sono arrivato a Santiago: sono sfinito!”». L’augurio è che ogni lettore di questo libro giunga a fare questo medesimo Camino qui narrato: col cuore, con l’anima e col sangue.
