This wide-ranging theme takes Braudel's concept of the “Mediterranean” as its starting point. Braudel's vision of an enclosed sea as a geographical opportunity for economic integration between nations with different religions, languages and ethnicities and political bodies still functions as a model for studies on a wide range of contexts. The goal of the 50th Study Week was to go beyond the study of individual systems in isolation, and to combine instead different analysis of open and enclosed seas or coastal areas in order to understand the integration role played by maritime connections in Europe. Since in pre-industrial civilizations water transport was easier than land transport, the time has come to bring attention to the way these relationship networks operated both on a European level and with Asian and North African trade partners. This volume starts from the great research traditions which have, however, rarely been integrated on a larger and continental scale, and analyses them on either a regional or thematic basis. Immanuel Wallerstein has developed Braudel's concept by conceptualising its intercultural and transnational dimensions and its role in the system of labour. He called it a "world system", not because it involves the whole world, but because it is larger than any legally defined political unit. And it is a "world economy" because the base link between the different parts of the system has an economic nature. The various regional research aspects and traditions have been linked together in a coherent approach which aims at evaluating: - What geographical, nautical, technical, economic, legal, social and cultural elements influenced the emergence of the various regional networks, and how these worked; - The nature and role of seaports as nodal points of sea routes and of their hinterland through rivers, canals and roads; - The commercial and personal ties between merchants and shipowners in various ports; - How regional networks connected with each other and how, over time, they ended up integrating into larger units; - How private networks, initially between merchant and seafarer organizations, ended up dealing with local authorities and, after their growth, with states and empires in order to protect their interests.

Il pavimento di questo cammino sta nella consapevolezza che Dio bacia sempre. Egli bacia con la parola, con il soffio, con il respiro, con la vita, con il suo passo leggero, con la morte, con la risurrezione. Noi possiamo imparare a baciare con baci che hanno il sapore della bellezza, della salvezza. Possiamo imparare a dare i baci stessi di Dio. Questa è la sfida.

Tuttavia, non è comprensibile che alla fine del libro ci siano sutte che ripetono quelle precedenti con differenze inapprezzabili. Questo libro contiene un famoso sutta che è completamente falso: AN 8.51 con Gotamī. Contiene la triste storia di un Buddha orfano curato dalla zia, che serve all'autore misogino per porre dei limiti alle donne. La trama vede, ovviamente, il servo Ānanda manipolare il Buddha affinché accetti l'ordinazione delle donne. Presenta tutte le componenti delle false sutte. Ad esempio, appare un Ānanda sopravvalutato, una storia che contraddice tutte le sutte che parlano della rinuncia del bodhisatta, quando la madre e il padre lo liquidano con gli occhi pieni di lacrime. Oppure in questa stessa raccolta, in AN 8.70 Terremoti, dove il Māra ricorda il Buddha chiedendogli di estinguersi: Signore, una volta hai fatto questa affermazione: "Malvagio, non mi estinguerò completamente finché non avrò discepoli bhikkhunīs di sesso femminile che siano competenti, istruiti, sicuri di sé, saggi....". L'ordine dei bhikkhunīs è una delle quattro missioni che il Buddha aveva fin dall'inizio. E la misoginia, come già sappiamo, è un'altra costante delle false sutte. Il pericolo di furto da parte dei governanti riappare qui fino a tre volte: AN 8.54, AN 8.55 e AN 8.76. La sezione delle sutte eccezionali è davvero ampia: AN 8.11, il Buddha è un abortista. AN 8.42 contiene un elenco esaustivo dei 16 Paesi dell'India dell'epoca. AN 8.10 e AN 8.20 riguardano l'espulsione di bhikkhus con la forza. AN 8.13 e AN 8.14, in cui il Buddha mostra un'eccezionale conoscenza dell'addestramento dei cavalli, che aiuta a fissare la sua origine sākka scita. Gli Sciti, amanti dei cavalli, furono i pionieri della loro doma. AN 8.19 è una bellissima descrizione di Nibbāna. AN 8.21 descrive Ugga, un laico straordinario. AN 8.29 descrive le occasioni mancate per praticare e AN 8.63 è una raccolta completa ma breve della pratica. Insomma, questa volta il faticoso ed esaustivo lavoro di ricerca e ricostruzione della linguistica comparata ha un premio, un premio importante.
