Desde joven, Miguel de Cervantes cultivó el género dramático con especial empeño: los primeros pasos de su carrera literaria incluyen el estreno de varias comedias, etapa que el propio autor describe con su humor característico: "todas se recitaron sin que se les ofreciese ofrenda de pepinos no de otra cosa arrojadiza". Este volumen reúne las piezas teatrales que han llegado hasta nuestros días, ya que muchas se perdieron: hay recuerdos autobiográficos, referidos a su etapa de cautiverio (El gallardo español, Los tratos de Argel), sucesos históricos (El rufián dichoso), y comedias de intriga (El laberinto de amor), entre páginas que abarcan desde los lances de capa y espada hasta escenas propias de la novela picaresca. Antes del éxito arrollador del teatro de Lope de Vega, Cervantes quiso indagar en un arte propio de hacer comedias, y para ello se propuso romper con no pocas de las convenciones del teatro clásico: "Fui el primero que representase las imaginaciones y los pensamientos escondidos del alma, sacando figuras morales al teatro, con general y gustoso aplauso de los oyentes"

Para finalizar, dos trabajos de su primera etapa: La princesa Araña, definida como una «asquerosa opereta surrealista para niños mutantes», e ideada con la escritora y pintora surrealista Leonora Carrington, y La fantasma cosquillosa, una obra para títeres denominada «farsa iniciática».

Se le considera uno de los mayores dramaturgos de las letras españolas, sobre todo porque se le atribuye la creación del mito de Don Juan.
