Hauptteil der Padagogik. Eine betrachtliche Anzahl von einzelnen Mitteln wendet der Erzieher taglich an; ein ganzes Chaos von Mitteln steht ihm zu Gebote. Die Wissenschaft der Padagogik hat Ordnung und Einheit in dieses Chaos zu bringen. Es mussen Gesichtspunkte aufgestellt werden. Wenn Ein Ziel aufgestellt worden ist, so lassen sich diese am leichtesten gewinnen aus dem Verhaltnisse der einzelnen Mittel zu dem obersten Ziele. Da kann dann als Fundamentum divisionis z. B. die Unmittelbarkeit oder Mittelbarkeit dienen, mit der die Mittel zur Erreichung des obersten Zieles beitragen. Mittelbar konnen sie dazu helfen, in sofern durch ein Drittes, zwischen Zogling und Erzieher Tretendes, dem Ziele entsprechende Dispositionen geschaffen werden. Diese Einteilung findet sich bei Herbart in seiner Einteilung der Erziehungsmittel in Regierung, Zucht und Unterricht, in entsprechender Weise bei Ziller), in modifizierter Gestalt bei Stoy). Manche andere Einteilungen sind moglich und auch geliefert worden. Diejenigen, die in der Teleologie einen mehrfachen Erziehungszweck annehmen, wie z. B. Comenius, wahlen am einfachsten die Mehrheit der Zwecke zum Ausgangspunkt in der Methodologie. So ergiebt sich bei Comenius eine Dreiteilung: 1. Mittel, welche die Wissenschaften den Zoglingen zu eigen macht, 2. Mittel fur die sittliche und 3. fur die religiose Bildung.
