In this cutting-edge study, Michael Rosenack provides a new understanding of the challenges inherent in teaching Judaism today. His ground-breaking theories are based on close examination of religious experience in individual's lives, consulting sources from all Jewish denominations, from Israel and the Diaspora, and from the non-Jewish world. Rosenak uses his research and a wealth of academic theories to formulate and present proposals for an honest, new approach to teaching religion in our contemporary, secular world.

The founders of the United States were well aware of religious differences in the new nation. Oppression had forced varied European religious groups to seek homes elsewhere, some in the new world of America. Governmental pressures toward conformity in religion had in the past led to corruption and civil strife. Thus, Congress made a dual assertion in its First Amendment to the Constitution: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." However, the ethical foundations of American society--and therefore its laws--intermingle with the moral codes of religions, including the Judeo-Christian Ten Commandments. This handbook helps bring understanding and meaning to the controversies that have arisen in present day society over the application of the Ten Commandments to public law and moral problems. Applications can be logical and legal, or can violate the separation of church and state called for in the First Amendment. Part One provides background on the Ten Commandments. It gives the various versions found in the Old Testament, and explains the non-Israelite influences on those versions (the Hammurabi Code, for example). The moral thinking of the ancient Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Hebrew cultures is examined. The modern Jewish tradition is detailed, as well as the different interpretations placed on the Ten Commandments by Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans and other Protestants. Part Two focuses on the modern controversies, assessing the differing sides of each. Among the many controversies covered are government funding of faith-based charities, posting the Ten Commandments in public buildings, science versus religion in schools, prayer in public places, blue laws, stem cell research, cloning, euthanasia, capital punishment, abortion and war, racial profiling and covenant marriages.

The Ten Commandments for This Dummy As divorce continues to plague our society, anger and frustration have become the norm for our growing children. The purpose of this book is to motivate couples to examine their personal demons prior to divorce, thus teaching valuable lessons of faith. This books details my straightforward, honest, and sarcastic journey through the author’s own divorce. Each chapter of this book begins with the original commandment, the "redneck version", and the author’s own version. Each chapter discusses the author’s view of the commandment, relative to marriage. The first chapter begins with the author’s personal story of how she put her spouse before God. It discusses different ways we push God aside in our lives and how to put God back as our top priority. The second chapter discusses the manner in which we talk to others as well as to God. Especially when making false promises because we have an urgent need to be filled. It discusses how we should praise God always, not just in a time of need. The third chapter discusses much needed rest in each marriage. It details prayer time, family time, and alone time. I discuss implementing a “personal” day into your monthly schedule. This will help you rejuvenate with friends and God. Chapter four expresses concern about advice from others. It details good advice and bad advice. The purpose of this chapter is to convince the reader that friends and family are not the best source of advice or opinions. It explains how we should seek God when we have questions and discuss these issues with appropriate people. The fifth chapter explains how murder can be committed by words with no tangible weapon necessary. It also discusses how so many people today use their children as their weapon of choice. Chapter six discusses infidelity and how very often both have fault in the situation. It details feelings of everyone involved, including the children. It also discusses how to overcome this tragedy through the grace of God. Chapter seven discusses taking things that do not belong to you. It encompasses possessions, time, manipulation, self-esteem, and the past. Chapter eight explains that no matter the size or color of the lie, it is still a lie. It also details the issue of “withholding information” which is used by so many people today. The ninth chapter discusses how our selfish desires can trick the heart and mind. It explains the “what if” situations that so many people fantasize about. It discusses having full faith in God to know that he will not let you go somewhere you shouldn’t be. The final chapter details jealousy and how it affects everyone around you. It discusses the difference in needs and wants. It details how faith will provide the needs necessary for spiritual growth then from that growth, the desires of the heart will be abundant.

The Ten Commandments: Case Studies in Catholic Morality is a single source that summarizes Catholic teaching around the Ten Commandments. Thirty case studies related to real-life issues and dilemmas addressed by each commandment make up the heart of this text and remind students of the central importance of the Ten Commandments as a source for moral decision-making along with contemporary ways the Commandments can be applied in their own lives. The text addresses both every day issues of morality faced by teens, such as cheating on exams, using alcohol and drugs, sex before marriage—along with wider and new societal issues including the use of embryonic stem cells for medical research, responsibility for environmental problems, and the proper use of money. The Ten Commandments: Case Studies in Catholic Morality is intended as an ancillary resource for students to accompany their study of Catholic morality. The text is a helpful partner to any theology class to help students review current applications of the Ten Commandments. The book is also applicable as a resource for teens participating in a high school youth ministry program.

In this book, Lochman presents an ethic illuminated by the Ten Commandments. In wrestling to discover the meaning of human life, both individual and social, his deepest concern has been with freedom under the law. Lochman points out that no human society, however well equipped technologically, can exist without a moral basis, without convictions that are more than mere opportunism, pragmatism, and calculated self-interest. This moral basis is provided by the Ten Commandments, the Magna Charta of freedom. Lochman discusses current problem areas of personal, sexual, and social ethics: worship of false gods, anxiety, the work ethic and the cult of success, murder, terrorism, suicide, abortion, euthanasia, the death penalty, war, the new morality, and new understandings of shared life in marriage.

In Jonathan Cohen (ed.) Language and Literatures in Jewish Education, 49-73. My aim in this essay is to engage Michael Rosenak's work at two central points: his understanding of the problems which face the Jewish educator who seeks, in a secular society, to initiate students into a fellowship that is "holy"; and his suggestions for how to accomplish this task.

God's Ten Commandments as written in Exodus 20:3-17 have not changed. We have! We have the opportunity to revisit God's Word and reacquaint ourselves with God's intended meaning. We were not created for our purpose in mind, but our creation is part of His Plan. The Ten Commandments have influenced non-religious Western culture more than it might imagine. This guide to the famous rules does more than explain what they are or what they say, but why we need them. This moral code in the Old Testament of the Bible—from which sprang ideas of justice, compassion, human rights, and freedom—has had such a strong impact on our society that it seems to represent what most of us think of as basic ethical reasoning. Even atheists like Richard Dawkins have offered up their own version of the Ten Commandments, and the strange thing is that many of them don't stray very far from the ethical teachings of Moses and Jesus. Bestselling author and apologist John Dickson explores how these ten rules have changed our world and how they show us what the "Good" (as Socrates called it) looks like in practice. Whether or not one believes in the Bible, these ten ancient instructions open a window to Western thought and civilization—and to our own souls. In each chapter, Dickson unpacks one of the ten famous commandments to show how they're not simply outdated rules but apply directly to our lives today. Along the way, he discusses broader philosophical implications, such as: Why do humans try to be good at all? What's the point of ethics, and why do we systematically seek them out? Why the Ten Commandments have outlived the moral codes of the ancient world, such as the Code of Hammurabi and the Maxims of Delphi. What does the Bible actually say about punishment and reward? How the teachings of Jesus relate to the much older instructions of Moses.
