Dans ce nouveau livre, Pascal Picq cherche à comprendre et à expliquer les causes du sort fait aux femmes dans les sociétés humaines modernes. À la lumière des enseignements de l’anthropologie sur le temps long de l’évolution, il interroge le passé proche et familier de la modernité et fait ressortir à partir de quelques thèmes emblématiques – la Querelle des femmes, la chasse aux sorcières, les femmes tondues à la Libération – le difficile cheminement des femmes entre la sortie du Moyen Âge et l’époque contemporaine. Pour Pascal Picq, la modernité n’a pas allégé le poids de la domination masculine en Occident. Au contraire, malgré l’humanisme, les Lumières, les sciences, les femmes semblent condamnées à un combat anthropologique sans fin pour l’égalité. Car la modernité a développé des formes idéologiques qui à la fois se revendiquent de la raison et s’appuient sur la nature supposée des femmes, les maintenant dans la sujétion des hommes du point de vue sexuel, économique, politique. Un livre qui revisite l’histoire récente en intégrant la perspective anthropologique et en redonnant toute leur place aux femmes, un enjeu fondamental pour l’évolution de l’humanité en train de se faire. Pascal Picq est paléoanthropologue. Ancien chercheur à l’Université Duke et au Collège de France, ses travaux se fondent sur une approche évolutionniste des changements actuels de nos sociétés. L’accès à l’éducation publique au XIXe siècle, la laïcisation progressive au XXe siècle, permettent aux filles et aux femmes de prendre conscience de leurs droits civiques à travers les courants du féminisme pour nombre d’entre elles. Les deux guerres mondiales révèlent le courage et l’héroïsme féminins. Après 1945, le droit de vote est enfin acquis et les femmes s’investissent dans la vie professionnelle et entrent dans la vie publique. De nos jours, les faits ont poussé à la parité dans la vie politique et à la volonté de dénonciation des pressions et des violences dans la vie quotidienne. Souhaitons que les hommes acceptent les fruits de l’équité dans la société française. Catherine Chadefaud, agrégée d’histoire, titulaire d’un doctorat de IIIe cycle en égyptologie, est docteure ès lettres et sciences humaines.
