Depuis le XVIIIe siècle, on a cherché à établir par la science une classification du genre humain, divisé en races hiérarchisées entre elles. Cette typologie a eu pour conséquence d'asseoir durablement dans l'opinion la croyance en l'existence de races humaines inégales, qui a notamment contribué à la justification des actes de conquêtes, d'asservissement ou d'extermination. La race est réelle parce que nous la percevons. Le racisme se nourrit du fait que nous ne le savons pas. Ni la race ni le racisme n'ont de fondement scientifique. Le racisme pseudo-scientifique est en pleine expansion il alimente la haine, nourrit le nationalisme et s'infiltre dans notre discours sur tous les sujets, du sport à l'intelligence. Les stéréotypes et les mythes sur la race sont exprimés non seulement par des racistes déclarés, mais aussi par des personnes bien intentionnées, dont l'expérience et le bagage culturel, les orientent vers des opinions qui ne sont pas soutenues par l'étude moderne de la génétique humaine. La science et l'histoire, si elles sont bien comprises, peuvent être de puissants alliés contre le racisme, en donnant la vision la plus claire de la façon dont les gens sont réellement, plutôt que de la façon dont nous les jugeons !
