« Lequier, à toi toujours ! » s’écrie André Breton dans l’avant-dire de Nadja, et Xavier Tilliette d’ajouter : « Lequier est un des rares philosophes qui font aimer d’emblée la philosophie, par le frémissement qu’il communique, par l’urgence qui le talonne, par ce langage direct, inhabituel, sans fioritures ni abstractions. » C’est dire combien nous espérons que cette nouvelle édition de ses écrits les plus importants puisse suggérer à notre siècle un ‘retour’ à Lequier (1824-1862), qui a posé en des termes, souvent repris mais jamais égalés, la question de la liberté : « Je suis libre. Je suis, par-delà ma dépendance, indépendant, je suis une indépendance dépendante ; je suis une personne responsable de moi, qui suis mon œuvre, à Dieu qui m’a créé créateur de moi-même. » Le volume comprend également La notice biographique de Jules Lequier par Prosper Hémon établie par Gérard Pyguillem, le très étonnant « L’incommunicable secret caché sous ce mot ‘Nous’ » de Lequier, tiré des manuscrits, et différentes contributions en appendice. Jules Lequier (1824-1862) est né à Quintin (Cotes-du Nord) et meurt (noyé) à côté de Saint-Brieuc. Il n'a jamais rien publié de son vivant, mais adressait ses écrits à Charles Renouvier qui publia dans SES écrits des pages de Lequier sans en préciser la provenance. A la mort de Lequier, Renouvier publia ses écrits mais ne les diffusa pas. Sartre emprunte à Lequier la définition de l'existentialisme: "Faire, non pas devenir, mais Faire et en faisant se faire."
