L'oeuvre directe laissée par Laotseu, qui a influé et influera longtemps encore sur l'esprit des hommes avec une puissance singulière, est, matériellement, l'une des moins considérables qui existent. La traduction du Te est conçue dans la même forme, rédigée avec la même précaution que la traduction que j'ai donnée du Tao. Je présente ici cette très fidèle traduction du Te, que mes lecteurs français trouveront peut-être inutile et obscure, mais qu'à coup sûr mes maîtres chinois ne désavoueraient point. Une tradition vivante Vivre de la vie de ces hommes, écouter leurs discours, voir leurs maximes mises en action: étudier les enseignements des TONGSANG, docteurs laïques, professeurs de la doctrine métaphysique; recueillir les rares paroles tombées de la bouche des PHUTUY, fils spirituels des mages hiératiques qui furent les premiers disciples du Maître; observer les méditations des phap, moines errants, suspects aux dynasties de Péking et de Hué, mystiques qui ont conservé la tradition des sciences divinatoires, voilà la préparation qui semble nécessaire pour mesurer la profondeur des chapitres de Laotseu. Note à propos de l'auteur Matgioi (1861-1939) Georges-Albert Puyou de Pouvourville occupa des fonctions militaires et administratives en Chine. Ses séjours prolongés au Tonkin lui permettent de pénétrer l'esprit chinois. Il rencontre alors un maître Taoïste qui le prépare à recevoir l'initiation dans une société secrète chinoise. Une fois initié, Albert de Pouvourville prend le nom de Matgioi, oeil du jour . Matgioi revient ensuite en Occident et entreprend de diffuser l'enseignement du Taoïsme, à l'encontre des orientalistes. Il expose ainsi, notamment dans la Voie métaphysique, les doctrines Taoïstes, au point de vue principiel comme dans leurs applications diverses. Matgioi est également connu pour avoir initié le métaphysicien René Guénon au Taoisme.
