The concept of conflict developed in this paper is a simple method of presenting the differential in power likely to be applied to a particular issue by competing nations with perhaps differing interests. It is schematic only and is not intended for numerical use because of the problems of quantification and the subjective factors involved. Conflict occurs between nations when they wish to project or protect their national interests. Three dimensions -- the strength of the nations involved, the interests at issue and the military power committed -- have been combined to develop a diagram expressing the differential in power between nations with different interests on a particular issue. The author argues that time should be recognised as a key dimension when analyzing a nation's commitment to conflict. There is a tendency to make assessments, at a given instant in time, of a nation's commitment to conflict. It is just as important to consider the capacity of a nation to sustain its commitment for the duration of the conflict. The amount of power nations are prepared to commit in pursuit of a particular interest is a major factor in shaping the level of conflict.

“Genius . . . will teach you how to transform your conflict into closeness. A beautiful read for anyone in a relationship they want to take higher.” —Regena Thomashauer, New York Times bestselling author If left unresolved, sources of disconnect—from bad breath to infidelity—can lead to major rifts and smother the spark in a relationship. Authors CrisMarie Campbell and Susan Clarke bring over twenty years of experience in family and marriage counseling and relationship coaching to this book. They cater their advice to romantic relationships and provide resolution strategies for women and men. While arguments with our partner can get tiring, looking at those disagreements as opportunities to strengthen the bond rather than weaken it can have a significant impact on their effect. With conflict comes the chance to communicate and solve problems together. This can restore a sense of intimacy and connection with our partner, both emotionally and physically. In The Beauty of Conflict for Couples, you will find: · Relatable stories that shed light on the common struggles of romantic relationships · Practical tools that offer guidance for addressing conflict · A source of hope for relationships that appear to be fated for failure “The Beauty of Conflict for Couples is a knock-your-socks-off book for anyone who has ever struggled with intimacy, vulnerability, and the longing to make this relationship work even when it seems impossible . . . This book is readable (I couldn’t put it down!), funny, warm, practical, and powerful.” —Ann Weiser Cornell, author of The Radical Acceptance of Everything and The Power of Focusing

Recently, scholarship on the causes and consequences of international mediation has exploded. While this research helps clarify the occurrence and outcomes of conflict resolution attempts, third party motivations have largely been ignored. Further consideration of third party commitment is necessary before we can effectively evaluate mediation outcomes. For example, existing scholarship does not differentiate between “cheap talk” and true commitments to conflict resolution. Long term third party involvement is often required before a conflict is resolved. How can we understand long term third party involvement with and commitment to the mediation process? I consider the supply of mediation in long-term conflicts. I argue third party decisions result from three factors: interests, conflict costs, and the prospects for peace. I employ selection models to show that many of the factors that increase mediation have an inverse effect on third party commitment to peace.

War is an inefficient outcome and therefore states ought to prefer to bargain over areas of conflict instead of fighting. However, in the anarchy of international relations there is no actor with a monopoly of power to enforce contracts between states. States then face a commitment problem when bargaining to prevent war. This dissertation explores three models where this commitment problem can lead to war. The first chapter presents a model that allows for shifts in the distribution of power which play out over an arbitrary number of time periods. This leads to a sufficient condition that implies war under a broader set of conditions than previously shown in the literature. This condition implies that preventive war may be caused by relatively slow, but persistent shifts in the distribution of power. As theorized in power transition theory, differential rates of economic growth can potentially cause war under this mechanism. Relaxing the unitary actor assumption of the first chapter, the second chapter analyzes how the domestic institutional structure of countries affects the likelihood of war. We model institutional divergence by comparing an infinitely lived dictatorship to a democracy with a replaceable leader and allow a range of leader incentives within these institutional frameworks. We show that dictators, even welfare maximizing ones, may lead to war if the initial distribution of resources is highly imbalanced whereas a democracy with a forward looking electorate is always peaceful. Yet when a democratic electorate is myopic, preventive war may result. Political parties act as a mechanism to prevent this outcome. In the third chapter, I investigate adding a third actor to the bargaining model of war. In a static setting, the model uses a notion of cooperative stability to predict balancing and bandwagoning behavior in alliance formation. When extended to a dynamic setting, changes to the system that result in alliance shifting may cause war. Additionally, alliance formation need not correspond to the static solutions, suggesting that the dynamics of power are as important as the distribution of power in alliance formation.

Commitment problems are inherent to non-binding conflict resolution mechanisms, since an unsatisfied party can ignore the resolution and initiate conflict. We provide experimental evidence suggesting that even in the absence of binding contractual agreements individuals often avoid conflict by committing to the outcome of a conflict resolution mechanism. Commitment problems are mitigated to a greater extent for groups that opt-in to the conflict resolution mechanism, but only when opting-in is costly. Although conflict rates are higher when opting-in is costly than when it is free or exogenously imposed, commitment problems are greatly reduced amongst those groups who choose to opt-in.
