Originally published in 1985 and now re-issued with a new preface, this study assesses the two major moral theories of ethical consequentialism and common-sense morality by means of mutual comparison and an attempt to elicit the implications and tendencies of each theory individually. The author shows that criticisms and defences of common-sense morality and of consequentialism give inadequate characterizations of the dispute between them and thus at best provide incomplete rationales for either of these influential moral views. Both theories face inherent difficulties, some familiar but others mentioned for the first time in this work. The argument proceeds by reference to historical figures like Bentham, Ross and Sidgwick and to contemporary thinkers such as Williams, Nagel, Hare and Sen.

If you were choosing a physician to perform a life-saving task for yourself or a loved one, would you choose a lesser-qualified physician because the better-qualified one had social or political views inconsistent with your own? Wouldn't common sense tell you that regardless of your personal disagreements, the better-qualified physician would always be the best choice? If you think so, then you are already following one of the foundational teachings of ethical pragmatism (EP)-a common sense philosophy that stands as a simple guide for finding clear perspectives on how to achieve goals in the most beneficial way. The first part of The Essence of Ethical Pragmatism (known as EP) explains the philosophy, its development and its justifications. The second part of the book shows how the philosophy can be implemented to better our lives with a number of examples that involve issues challenging us today.

The Common Sense Ethics Of A Blue Collar Philosopher written by S. G. Applebee and has been published by Publishamerica Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-10 with Philosophy categories.

As a former thief, drug abuser, street-fighting trouble-maker, Mr. Applebee was heading for disaster. However, one day he was listening to a radio talk show host and it changed his life forever. He never cared about morality until this faceless voice over the airwaves made it perfectly clear to him he wasnat going anywhere in life unless he understood what virtues and values were all about, and from that moment on, he made up his mind to study the worldas religions and philosophies in order to discover for himself the meaning of life and what it meant to be a truly moral human being. After he devoted himself to this book (which took him over twelve years to research and seven years to write), he finally achieved his goal of laying out common sense moral principles that are universally recognized around the globe. And although much of his book will be seen as extremely controversial, his rock-solid foundations simply cannot be dismissed or ignored by anyone who takes the subjects of religion, politics, or ethics seriously. If you want to learn the basics of morality; if youare looking to expand your moral paradigm; if youare up for an easy-to-read, yet thought-provoking, page turner, then you have come to the right place.

Business Ethics And Common Sense written by Robert McGee and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-10-23 with Business & Economics categories.

Many business ethics books take a basically collectivist approach to the subject. They speak in terms of collective rights and interests, the public interest, social justice, the greatest good for the greatest number, and so forth. If individualism is mentioned at all, it is mentioned disparagingly. This book takes a different approach. While some of the contributors to this volume take the more popular, collectivist approach, many of them do not. Thus, this book offers a more balanced presentation of business ethics than that found in most books on the subject. The book is divided into four parts. The contributors to Part I offer an enlightening look at the philosophical foundations of business ethics via discussions on the teaching of business ethics, on the relationship between capitalism and morality, on the philosophical concepts of selfishness, exploitation, and the profit motive, as well as a unique chapter where business ethics issues are looked at against the foil of the philosophy of Ayn Rand. Part II addresses business ethics issues that involve the relationship of the corporation to outsiders. Among the topics discussed are the concept of corporate duty and social responsibility, environmental issues, and business ethics applied to so-called anti-competitive practices. Part III discusses some issues regarding the responsibility of the corporation to insiders, and Part IV covers some of the ethical responsibilities of employees and the corporation. A major contribution to the field of business ethics, this edited work is recommended for scholars, practitioners, and the general public.
