Prevention through appropriate behavior is the best weapon available to fight further spread of HIV infection. Over the past few years, ever since the advent of HIV and AIDS, there has been increasing discussion of the concept of sexual health. This upsurge is especially noticeable not only in the field of health education and promotion but also in academic sources. The recent discourse on sexual health is paralleled by an upsurge in the debate on sexual rights. This book examines the social construction of sexual health in India through an analysis of HIV and AIDS messages. The broad objective of the chapters is to trace the growth and evolution of the concept of sexual health from a health communication perspective and to understand the role of the state in determining its form and structure. Stating that HIV/AIDS is a colossal public health problem is a vast understatement. Our hope for this book is that additional insight into HIV/AIDS prevention can be garnered and the ideas generated here will spur new efforts and improve existing ones. The chapters in this book explore how health communication researchers and practitioners continue to play critical roles in lessening the spread of HIV and the devastating impacts of HIV/AIDS locally, regionally, and globally. HIV/AIDS has had tremendous impact on the world's populations especially, people living in Sub Sahara Africa. Efforts to curtail the diseases' spread have focused on preventive rather than curative strategies. However, recent reports indicate that infection rates continue to rise worldwide, especially among women. Social observers have attributed women's vulnerability to the disease, to various social, economic, and cultural factors. In response to these observations, various projects have been put in place to help address gender discourses in HIV/AIDS infection. However, an examination of these projects reveal that little or no attention is paid to gender discourse in health communication content. This book examines gender and communal cultural values in health communication messages, with specific emphasis on televised messages aimed at women. The study applies social identity and cultural relevancy values to already existing televised HIV/AIDS messages and the messages' effects on women were measured using identity salience, credibility of message presenter, acceptance and recall variables. Seventy Ghanaian women between the ages of 20 and 56 took part in the study.
