Nous étudions l'usage d'Internet en tant qu'outil de communication dans le milieu scientifique, plus précisément, son utilisation en tant que tel par la communauté scientifique. Ainsi, à travers sa longue évolution, la communication scientifique s'est basée sur plusieurs techniques et moyens de communication par exemple, l'imprimerie, les nouvelles technologies de l'information et de la communication et aujourd'hui, l'Internet. Le réseau est alors identifié comme un véritable outil de communication et d'information qui contribue en même temps à l'apparition de nouvelles pratiques de communication et d'information chez les chercheurs. À travers les outils de communication tels que l'e-mail et les listes de diffusion, Internet est devenu le vecteur de la communication informelle qu'elle soit interpersonnelle ou de groupe. La rapidité, l'immédiateté et la facilité de la communication sont en ce sens les principaux facteurs qui expliquent son utilisation. De plus, le réseau s'avère être un excellent moyen de coordination des collaborations scientifiques. Internet est également un lieu de rencontre, un espace de communication qui permet à la communauté scientifique de communiquer, d'échanger et de partager des connaissances. Dans l'environnement Internet, le web associe l'information à la communication. Ainsi, les possibilités offertes au niveau de la recherche (recherche guidée par une politique de liens et un mode de recherche exploratoire) et de l'accessibilité de l'information (accès à la fois rapide, immédiat et planétaire) dans cet espace informationnel qu'est le web associées à celles de la fraîcheur et de la diversité de l'information disponible font d'Internet un moyen d'information pour les chercheurs. Si le réseau permet d'optimiser la fonction diffusion de l'information, celle-ci demeure limitée à la diffusion de certains types d'informations (des informations institutionnelles ou encore des informations personnelles à caractère professionnel). En ce sens, la place réservée à l'information scientifique dans l'ensemble de l'information à diffuser est freiné à la fois par l'absence d'une culture de diffusion et les problèmes du droit d'auteur. Bref, l'Internet est porteur à la fois de nouveaux bouleversements et de nouveaux développements. Il génère des effets paradoxaux, mais présente en même temps de véritables enjeux pour la science et la communauté scientifique.
