Intended as a supplement in Social and Political Philosophy, Political Theory, Political Ideologies, and Democratic Theory, as well as a core volume for courses taught exclusively on communitarianism. That liberal democratic theory needs to be changed and our institutions need to be reformed is an argument strenuously resisted by many political philosophers. The most interesting development in political philosophy in the last 15 years has been the communitarian critique of liberalism. Communitarians insist that deficiencies in liberal theory are directly to blame for the declining fortunes of the American people. They propose to substitute the values of community for values of liberty and equality as the guiding ideal of our culture.

With the collapse of European socialism in the late 1980s, ascendancy of the liberal capitalist democracy and individual self-interest became prevalent in the West. In contrast, many polities in Asia, both by tradition and choice, have explicitly adopted communitarianism as a national ideology, for example Confucianism in Korea, Hong Kong and Japan, Islam in Malaysia and the Panca Sila in Indonesia. Here, communitarianism arguably informs public policies and political practices and the concept of the 'social' in terms of responsibilities and collective welfare is preserved. Communitarian Politics in Asia examines instances in southeast and east Asian countries where communitarianism is both articulated as national ideology and embedded as the ethos of social life and assesses the relative merits of a set of practices in their respective local political context. The book not only augments existing international debate on liberalism and communitarianism but also provides empirical examples of communitarian political practices that will substantiate and/or refute conceptual points, such as redistributive justice and costs to individuals, in this ongoing debate.

One of the sharpest recent debates over media ethics has centered around what has been variously called public or civic or communitarian journalism. This special issue examines some of the underlying concerns of communitarian journalism including the relationships between individual and community and the connecting role of journalism; negative vs. positive freedoms; constitutional vs. marketplace mandates; universal vs. situational/professional values; individual vs. corporate vs. democratic loyalties; commitment and compassion vs. detachment and professional "distance;" and "talking to" vs. "talking with." Authors of these essays include some of the best-known practitioners and critics of contemporary journalism. They wrote these papers as part of a 2-year lecture series funded by the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation and hosted by the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg.

"This book makes a very ambitious proposal. The proposal is that Catholic social thought can contribute significantly to revivifying the American experiment in liberal democracy. That there is a need, and urgent need, for such a revival is today widely recognized by thinkers across the political and philosophical spectrum. Some of the essays here are polemical and others apologetic, but the book taken all in all is a proposal. As such, it must make its case sometimes in conversation with and sometimes against other proposals that are advanced in the public square of democratic discourse." [Foreword].

Examining, in the widest sense, the changes in political philosophy that have occurred in Western capitalist states since the early 1980s, this book focuses on the introduction of neo-liberal principles in the combined area of social and education policy. New Zealand presents a paradigm example of the neo-liberal shift in political philosophy. From constituting the social laboratory of the Western world in the 1930s in terms of social welfare provision, New Zealand has become the neo-liberal experiment of the fully marketised society in the 1990s. Against the theoretical background of educational theory and practice, this book examines neo-liberalism and its critiques as responses to the so-called crisis of the welfare state and argues for a reformulated critical social policy in the postmodern condition. The conclusions about social policy drawn by the authors can be generalized to similar situations in other Western capitalist countries.
