The papers in this comprehensive volume survey many recent innovations in ultrashort pulse generation, and review the state of the art in compact, modelocked laser systems, discussing both their operational principles and potential applications. The book first covers the theory of short optical pulse generation by modelocking. Then, contributors discuss modelocking techniques in different types of lasers: solid state; diode-pumped; fiber; surface emitting semiconductor lasers; external cavity semiconductor lasers; hybrid soliton pulse sources; and monolithic colliding pulse modelocked diode lasers. Presenting both theoretical and experimental aspects throughout, this book will be invaluable to anyone interested in short pulse laser systems, and particularly to researchers involved in high speed communications or the investigation of ultrafast phenomena.

"Ultrashort Laser Pulse Phenomena, 2e" serves as an introduction to the phenomena of ultra short laser pulses and describes how this technology can be used to examine problems in areas such as electromagnetism, optics, and quantum mechanics. Ultrashort Laser Pulse Phenomena combines theoretical backgrounds and experimental techniques and will serve as a manual on designing and constructing femtosecond ("faster than electronics") systems or experiments from scratch. Beyond the simple optical system, the various sources of ultrashort pulses are presented, again with emphasis on the basic concepts and how they apply to the design of particular sources (dye lasers, solid state lasers, semiconductor lasers, fiber lasers, and sources based on frequency conversion). *Provides an easy to follow guide through "faster than electronics" probing and detection methods *THE manual on designing and constructing femtosecond systems and experiments *Discusses essential technology for applications in micro-machining, femtochemistry, and medical imaging

The goal of this program was to demonstrate that femtosecond laser sources (1 femtosecond = 10-15 sec) can be made to be extremely compact and robust. We demonstrated the generation of ultrashort pulses using compact diode-pumped lasers. Our latest pump source is 300 times smaller and weighs only a fraction of today's commercial equivalent. It runs on 110 VAC and requires no water cooling. The commercial availability of robust sources will have a broad commercial impact. A brief listing includes: industry (3D imaging, ranging, thin-film monitoring, optical memory), medical (confocal microscopy, real-time assessment of surgical procedure), and military (sensor fusion, high-power THz beam generation, phase-array radars). We are pursuing the development (of a general laboratory instrument, as well as several specific applications. This large market has not gone unnoticed: Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITT) has very recently recommended Femtosecond Technology as one of Japan's only six priority research areas. Laser, Femtosecond, Solid-state laser, Diode-laser, Kerr-lens modelocking.

High Energy And Short Pulse Lasers written by Richard Viskup and has been published by BoD – Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-07 with Science categories.

This book gives the readers an introduction to experimental and theoretical knowledge acquired by large-scale laser laboratories that are dealing with extra-high peak power and ultrashort laser pulses for research of terawatt (TW), petawatt (PW), or near-future exawatt (EW) laser interactions, for soft X-ray sources, for acceleration of particles, or for generation of hot dense thermal plasma for the laser fusion. The other part of this book is dealing with the small-scale laser laboratories that are using for its research on commercial sources of laser radiation, nanosecond (ns), picosecond (ps), or femtosecond (fs) laser pulses, either for basic research or for more advanced applications. This book is divided into six main sections dealing with short and ultrashort laser pulses, laser-produced soft X-ray sources, large-scale high-power laser systems, free-electron lasers, fiber-based sources of short optical pulse, and applications of short pulse lasers. In each chapter readers can find fascinating topics related to the high energy and/or short pulse laser technique. Individual chapters should serve the broad spectrum of readers of different expertise, layman, undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists, and engineers, who may in this book find easily explained fundamentals as well as advanced principles of particular subjects related to these phenomena.

This thesis provides unique information on the Kerr-lens mode-locking (KLM) technique applied to a thin-disk laser. It describes in detail cavity geometry, the qualitative approach to KLM, and self-starting behavior in the regime of both negative and positive dispersion. Comprehensive comparative analysis of KLM and semiconductor saturable absorber techniques is also carried out. Recent successful experiments on carrier-envelope phase stabilization, spectral broadening and compression of output of this oscillator underline the importance of this new, emerging technology.

Progress In Optics written by and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-05-20 with Science categories.

Optics has become one of the most dynamic fields of science since the first volume of Progress in Optics was published, forty years ago. At the time of inception of this series, the first lasers were only just becoming operational, holography was in its infancy, subjects such as fiber optics, integrated optics and optoelectronics did not exist and quantum optics was the domain of only a few physicists. The term photonics had not yet been coined. Today these fields are flourishing and have become areas of specialisation for many science and engineering students and numerous research workers and engineers throughout the world. Some of the advances in these fields have been recognized by awarding Nobel prizes to seven physicists in the last twenty years. The volumes in this series which have appeared up to now contain 240 review articles by distinguished research workers, which have become permanent records for many important developments. They have helped optical scientists and optical engineers to stay abreast of their fields. There is no sign that developments in optics are slowing down or becoming less interesting. We confidently expect that, just like their predecessors, future volumes of Progress in Optics will faithfully record the most important advances that are being made in optics and related fields.
