Los acuíferos costeros el rasgo particular de la existencia de una masa de agua salada en unao de los límites del acuífero. En la proximidad del contacto mar-acuífero existe un equilibrio dinámico de fuerzas, extremadamente frágil, que gobiernan los fenómenos de intercambio y transporte entre las masas de agua salada del mar y del agua dulce del acuífero. El agua salada, por su mayor densidad, desplaza al agua dulce hacia arriba y penetra en el acuífero una distancia determinada por el valor particular de los niveles del agua en el acuífero y en el mar, y por las diferencias particulares de densidad. Se forma así la cuña salina. Los modelos utilizados para estudiar este contacto entre el agua dulce y el agua salada se clasifican en modelos de interfase neta o modelos de transporte de masa acoplados. Los modelos de interfase neta consideran que el agua dulce y salada son fluidos inmiscibles, estos modelos sólo dan una aproximación correcta de la posición de agua dulce y del agua del mar cuando la zona de mezcla es de pocos metros. Los modelos de trasporte de masa que se usan en intrusión marina, al contrario que los modelos de interfase neta, consideran que el agua dulce y salada pueden mezclarse y en ellos se tienen encuenta los efectos de la densidad del flujo sobre el movimiento, por eso se los llama modelos de densidad variable. Los modelos de transporte de masa de densidad variable solucionana las ecuaciones de estado para relacionar la concentración de solutos con la densidad del fluido (Oude Essink, 2003c). La dificultad más importante enla aplicación de estos modelos se presentan en la fase de calibración, puesto que implica el ajuste y resolución simultáneos de un modelo de flujo y otro de transporte. De masa, además de la escasez de datos de campo necesarios para describir la matriz de densidad variable y las condiciones de borde del acuífero estudiado, generalmente determina que los modelos de transporte de.
