Excerpt from Comparative Art The fundamental idea underlying this monograph is to make an examination and comparison of the fine arts of as many races as possible, and of the resemblances and differences between these arts, to see whether any new light can thereby be shed on man and his history. In other words, this is an attempt to look from an esthetic standpoint at what man has produced in the esthetic arts, and to see whether anything can be learnt about man therefrom, or to put it still differently, it is a study of art for the sake of science. A comparison of the arts of the different races of men of to-day should throw; it would seem, some light on the esthetic and mental similarities and divergences between these races. And in the same way, a comparison of the arts of the races of the present with those of the arts of the races of the past should enable us, to a certain extent, to gauge the development of our early ancestors. From the INTRODUCTION. I Don't Know, But I Want To Know. Many years ago, I began delving into the graphic and glyptic arts from various parts of the world. In 1906 I brought out my observations and the theories resulting therefrom in a preliminary work: Comparative Art. This, as far as I know, was the first attempt ever made to examine into and classify the fine arts of all races. From that time on, my wife and I have continued the study of art from a comparative standpoint in the field, in art museums, in ethnographic museums, from our own collection, from photographs and from illustrations in books. In 1918, we published a book Art and Man, * a twenty-fold enlarged and elaborated presentation of the theoretical parts of Comparative Art. The present work records once more the observations made before 1906 together with those we have made since that date; and with the addition of a few fresh deductions formulated since the publication of Art and Man. Certain parts of this work, however, necessarily deal with prehistory or history. The data about these we have gathered as far as possible from leading authorities in their special fields. But these historical data have nothing to do with our art criticisms. These are based on what our own eyes have shown us; and from what we have seen we have drawn our own deductions and theories. In other words the observations and the criticisms are original with us and are regardless of and independent of what anyone else thinks or believes. Some parts of this book are more elaborate than others. This comes partly from fortuitous circumstances. Some phases of art have interested us more than others and therefore we have studied them more. Material from certain places has been more accessible than material from other places. When there have been many genuine specimens available it has been possible to form a more authoritative opinion than when we have had to rely on copies or illustrations. For the best copies or photographs never give quite the vitality or flavor of the original art and all criticism based on such secondary material must be more hesitating than criticism based on original examples....

Modern anthropology is essentially based on comparative studies. In all the avenues of approach to the complex science of man -- somatology, linguistics, culture -- use of the comparative method has brought most fruitful results. In one phase, however, it has not been adopted -- in art. Yet it is here no less desirable. Thus Haddon, writing of course as an anthropologist whose training is primarily zoological, says: ''the geographical distribution of art is as yet uninvestigated, but, with careful and capable handling, we may expect it to yield results not less interesting than those of the distribution of animals" ("Evolution in Art," 1895). In indicating the two methods of studying art as the esthetic and the scientific he suggests one of the reasons why so little has been done towards a study of comparative art. This difficulty is voiced by Mr. Balch: ''Comparative art is the study of the relations of the arts of the world and can be advanced only by trained art critics who are also ethnologists." But it is rare to find the subjective and the objective viewpoints combined in one individual. Mr. Balch himself does not escape the dominance of the esthetic influence: his analysis is essentially the subjective one of the art critic, but -- and here is the interest of his work to the student of the science of man -- he does recognize the scope of an objective inquiry. In the chapters on the distribution of art, on local and intrusive arts, and on art and man he suggests lines along which it must proceed. The first of these chapters classifies the world's art, ancient and modern, primitive and highly developed (the connotation is the fine arts in the broadest sense), into art families according to the lines of their development, briefly examining their characteristics and distribution. The question of local and intrusive art is a phase of the great problem of the spread of culture, itself of fundamental significance to the origin and evolution of man. We need, for instance, studies of the fine arts along similar lines to the studies of cultural migrations by the Elliot Smith school. In the case of the fine arts, however, the difficulty of distinguishing the two factors that Haddon terms "the solidarity of the human race'' and "ethnic idiosyncrasy" will be peculiarly great, for art is an exceedingly ancient and universal attribute of man.--Geographical Review, Volume 7
