Excerpt from Art and Man: Comparative Art Studies All my life I have been interested in art and in geog raphy. My studies in both fields remained as separate pursuits until about the year 1890, when I began to make a small collection of Japanese pictures. At about that time also I paid several visits to the Musee de Saint Germain and studied the French prehistoric remains. Shortly afterwards, I received from Dr. Vincent, surgeon of the third Peary Arctic expedition, a gift of several little Eskimo statuettes. Gradually I became impressed with the fact that there are certain resemblances be tween these arts, and this led me to an attempt to find out whether there were any such resemblances to other arts. The matter expanded continuously, but it took some years for cold facts to teach me that the fine arts were a tremendous field, covering the entire earth, and that, apparently, no one had realized this before. Excerpt from Enamelling: A Comparative Account of the Development and Practice of the Art This is not a book for the learned, but for artists, craftsmen, students, and lovers of enamelling. As to the history of the subject, I know enough to assume no personal authority upon dates and derivations. All I have set myself to do, so far as they are concerned, is to put into handy, readable, and easily intelligible shape the gist of what I have learnt from Kondakow, Von Falke, Franks, Labarte, and other learned but less helpful specialists. As to the practice of the art, I may claim a closer acquaintance with technique, with vitreous colour, and especially with design, than belongs to the usual equipment of the scholar; and I have tried, not so much to map out with impossible precision the direct but in any case very problematical development of enamelling, as to find out precisely where we are, to take, as it were, stock of past accomplishment, with a view always to fresh enterprise in art and workmanship. None but a rather dense or a very self-satisfied devotee of modernity can help seeing the need of some such preliminary to original work. Excerpt from The Representative Significance of Form: An Essay in Comparative Aesthetics The two tendencies of art thus exemplified, and the constant inclination of the mind, when perceiving the de ficiency in the one, to turn altogether away from it to that which, when regarded in itself alone, causes equal de ficiency in the other, make one feel, at times, as if it were wellnigh hopeless to try, as has been attempted in these volumes, to introduce into the conceptions of American artists and critics even a beginning of that balance be tween the two which always characterizes the highest art, - that of ancient Hellenism, for instance, which was equally careful to reproduce only the ideal in thought and only the beautiful in form. I have concluded that nothing could more certainly accomplish the desired end than a practical recognition of the relationship of art both to religion on the one hand and to science on the other, together with a recognition of the natural limitations to art which such a double relationship necessarily involves.
