Man's attempts to learn about aspects of the human body and its functions by observation and study of animals are to be found throughout history, especially at times and in cultures where the human body was considered sacrosanct, even after death. This book describes the origins and later development, especially in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, of comparative medicine and its interrelationship with medicine and veterinary medicine and the efforts of its practitioners to understand and control outbreaks of infectious, epidemic diseases in humans and in domestic animals. In the nineteenth century their efforts and increasing professionalism led to the creation of specialised institutes devoted to the study of comparative medicine. Paradoxically the first such institute, the Brown Institution, opened in London in 1871, despite the fact that the study of this branch of medicine in Britain had always lagged behind that in France and Germany. The book discusses the rise and fall of this centre and describes how it was soon overtaken in importance by the great institutes in Paris and Berlin and then, from the turn of the century, by American institutes, funded by private fortunes. This book sheds much new light on the medical and veterinary history of this period and will provide a new perspective on the history of bacteriology.

Frontiers In Comparative Medicine written by W. I. B. Beveridge and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1972-10-25 with Medical categories.

Frontiers in Comparative Medicine was first published in 1972.In this initial volume of the series to be based on the Wesley W. Spink Lectures on Comparative Medicine, Dr. Beveridge, the noted British scientist, discusses the contributions to human medicine resulting from studies of disease in animals. The book serves as an excellent introduction to this important aspect of science, suitable for general readers as well as for those studying or working in the medical, biological, or social sciences.Dr. Beveridge examines the methodology of comparative science and tells of the remarkable series of key discoveries of disease agents which have emerged from research on animals. He explains the reasons for the success of animal studies in connection with human disease and makes a strong case for more research on naturally occurring animal models. The author describes current comparative studies in cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neuropathology, immunopathology, congenial defects, metal health, reproduction, and population regulation. He shows that in each of these subjects results that have far-reaching implications for human welfare and medicine are being obtained. In the final section he assembles the available evidence about the origin of human influenza pandemics. He points to a conclusion that they probably result from a hybridization of human and animal strains of the disease agent and that the usual place where this occurs appears to be the plains of Central Asia. He emphasizes the need for an international investigation of the problem of influenza, in the hope of preventing these pandemics.

Comparative Medicine written by Erika Jensen-Jarolim and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-27 with Science categories.

This book highlights the most significant diseases for humans and their dogs, cats and horses. The examples discussed, which include allergies, osteoporosis, cancer and many more, illustrate that humans and their companion animals may in fact develop similar diseases. The reader - whether expert or interested lay - can thus directly compare between human and animal patients. The animal patient thereby represents a natural disease model, which besides the experimental models, is urgently needed to improve the therapeutic options for both humans and animals.
