Abstract:The purpose of this study was to obtain normative data to contribute to the limited body of knowledge of pediatric gait norms, and also to demonstrate the reliability of the simple, non-invasive gait analysis technique of footprint analysis. Eleven 5 year olds and seven 3 year olds were studied. All subjects had no known orthopedic, neurological, or developmental problems. The gait parameters studied were stride length, step length, and step width, and computations were performed to obtain velocity and cadence. Functional leg length was measured on the barefoot subjects. Three 35 foot long pieces of paper were taped to the floor for three trials. All first trials were discarded. Each child's feet were placed on an ink pad and the child then walked to the opposite end of the paper. The time was recorded for the child to walk ten steps within the middle 15 foot area of the paper. Means, standard deviations, and t-values were computed using the SPSSX data analysis program. The t-value was subsequently used to determine the level of significance at p

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare the gait patterns of children in three different age groups based on the gait variables of base of support, step length (adjusted for leg length), included angle of foot placement, cadence, and velocity. This study consisted of 60 white children, 26 males and 34 females, with no known orthopedic, developmental, or neurological problems. Subjects were divided into the following age groups: under 3 years of age, 5-6.9 years of age, and 10-11.9 years of age. Gait variables were measured using Footprint analysis. Moleskin patches were applied to the soles of each subject's feet. Paint was then applied to the moleskin and distance measurements were obtained from the imprints created as the subject walked across the paper. A stop watch was used to obtain time measurements in order to calculate cadence and velocity. Results from the two-way ANOVAs Indicated that significant differences existed among groups on the gait variables, with the exception of average base of support and included angle of foot placement. It was concluded that children 5-6.9 years of age demonstrated a gait pattern similar to those of children 10-11.9 years of age.

Themes In Motor Development written by H.T.A Whiting and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Psychology categories.

This book is divided into Sections. Each Section is devoted to a particular theme in Motor Development and comprises two or more contributions. The order of presentation is largely fortuitous and does not reflect any value judgement on the part of the editors as to the importance of anyone theme in comparison to others addressed' in the book. This volume is to be seen as a companion volume to 'Motor Development in Children: Aspects of coordination and control' in which the more general issues in motor development presented during the Institute are published. Together, the two volumes provide both a general and a theme specific approach to this expanding field of knowledge. XI PREFACE Books and conferences, on what in North America is euphemistically termed motor development, have been few and far between in the past 25 years. This is not to say that the study of how children acquire and develop motor skills has not been a subject on which scientists have focused their attention. In the United States in the 1930's and 1940's, Bayley (1935) and Gesell and Amatruda (1947) described and scaled the rates at which young children acquired motor skills. In Europe, the development of childrens' motor behaviour was of theoretical interest to Piaget (1952).
