This study evaluated the validity of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) Restructured Clinical (RC) Scales in a sample of 180 military law enforcement recruits. The RC Scales were compared to the MMPI-2 Clinical Scales to evaluate intercorrelations, saturation with a demoralization factor, and for convergent validity using the NEO Personality Inventory Revised (NEO-PI-R) as criteria. Previous research found that the RC scales demonstrate reduced intercorrelations (with the exception of RC9), reduced saturation with demoralization, and increased convergent validity with a number of established criteria; however, the results of the current study were mixed. Most RC scales demonstrated reduced intercorrelations--with the exception of RC3 and RC6--and increased saturation with demoralization. The majority of comparisons using the NEO-PI-R favored the RC Scales.

The current study examined the construct validity of the Restructured Clinical (RC) scales (Tellegen et al., 2003) of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2; Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989) and MMPI-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2008) and the assessment of personality disorders. Tellegen et al. (2003) constructed the RC scales to address the perceived psychometric limitations of the Clinical scales and to measure the core psychological constructs of each of the Clinical scales whilst enhancing convergent and particularly discriminant validity. Tellegen et al.'s project resulted in the development of nine RC scales that were designed to be independent of the pervasive influence of the first factor, more distinctive and a more accurate measure of the core psychological constructs the original Clinical scales were designed to measure. This study utilised a forensic sample (n = 83) in order to analyse the construct validity of the RC scales when compared to the Structured Clinical Interview for the fourth edition of the DSM (DSM-IV; APA, 1994) Axis II Disorders-Personality Questionnaire (SCID-II PQ; First, Gibbon, Spitzer, Williams & Benjamin, 1997) and the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R; Costa & McCrae, 1992). The findings for this study demonstrated the construct validity of the RC scales when compared to the SCID-II PQ personality disorder raw scores and the NEO-PI-R domain and facet scales. The RC scales also accounted for additional variance over the NEO-PI-R domain scales for 8 out of the 10 SCID-II PQ personality disorder raw scores and provided a clinically accurate profile of personality disorders when expressed in their more pathological variants in a forensic population. The findings provide strong support for the construct validity of the MMPI-2/MMPI-2-RF RC scales and the assessment of personality disorders in a forensic setting. The results also support the aims of Tellegen et al. to create a set of scales that accurately measure the core psychological constructs of the Clinical scales whilst enhancing convergent and discriminant validity.

This study examined the Restructured Clinical (RC) Scales of the MMPI-2 in a sample of 400 adult psychiatric inpatients. Scale intercorrelations were calculated for the RC and Clinical Scales and an exploratory factor analysis was conducted to assess the degree to which the developers of the scales were successful in the process of decreasing scale intercorrelations and removing the generalized Demoralization that artificially inflated the original basic nine Clinical Scales. Exploratory principle axis factor analysis was conducted with promax rotation. Resulting factors are discussed as is the finding of diminished generalized Demoralization on RC Scales 1 through 9. The authors of the RC Scales set forth the goal to remove Demoralization from the scales and to increase the disciminant validity of the RC Scales. This study indicates that the RC Scales, in the current inpatient sample are largely free of Demoralization. Further, the RC Scales were found to demonstrate better discriminant validity than that of the original Clinical Scales, though in the current sample the improvement in discriminant correlations is more modest than those reported in the RC Monograph.

In a managed care era, the MMPI-2 is becoming an overloaded workhorse, required to generate more and more of the assessments that a battery of instruments once did. Though all now rely on the MMPI-2 for good reasons, and the MMPI has fallen out of use entirely, some important and clinically useful scales were lost in the transition. Edward Gotts and Thomas Knudsen have recovered these scales and integrated them with all the standard MMPI-2 scales, the recently published Restructured Clinical Scales, and a number of scales they have constructed to assess positive strengths and coping abilities, and response consistency-inconsistency. This book lays out their new Content Cluster interpretive approach. Drawing on data from a large psychiatric inpatient sample, they present item composition, reliability, and validity information for each recovered and new scale, and convincingly demonstrate that their new Content Cluster approach results in improved prediction and interpretive power. They also show how to conjoin Rorschach and MMPI-2 results in more effective assessment strategies, and how to tie MMPI-2 results to specific DSM-IV criteria. The Clinical Interpretation of the MMPI-2: A Content Cluster Approach offers psychologists essential new tools for clinical and personality assessment.
